4TB red or green?

Go to solution Solved by Bubben,

I'm getting a red, seeing as there doesn't seem to be any compelling reason not to. Paying <100 SEK extra for a longer warranty and better supposed reliability is a no-brainer.

I'm interested in buying a 4TB hdd for storage purposes, and I'm looking at the new reds and greens from WD. I'm very sensitive to vibrations and going by my experience with the greens I'm currently using; I'd preferably only have one mechanical drive in my system.

So the question is really whether I'd gain anything by going with a green (besides negligible price differences) or lose anything by going with a red?

I know that reds are meant for raid, but as far as I can tell the software feature which makes them behave differently, doesn't actually make them unsuitable for standalone use(?), and it's not unthinkable that I might get another in the future for raid 1.

if you dont care about the noise go with the red, if youre a silence freak ans can accept the slightly slower speed, go with the green

If you are as sensitive to vibrations as me, then I would go for the Green, I really don't see a performance drop from 7200 to 5400.

There would be a noticeable difference but wouldn't they be running lower for greens low power, less heat output

I would say go Black (not trying to be racist or anything) but you don't quite like loud spinning mechanical platters.

But if these are you choice Red is a more stable operation in more likelyhood

I heard Seagate Barracuda's are good

I'm gonna say no, given their 1 year warranty and my experience with them. I'm currently moving to 2 x 3TB red drives for OS / storage and will be caching the OS drive with an SSD. The Seagates are cheaper, so I would say maybe if you need the extra speed but do not need such high reliability or assured silence/optimal running. Mine have become louder and noisier over time, but they do still run fairly fast so I'll be using my old drives for other means.

They both run at 5400, and aren't red drives supposed to vibrate less and thereby make less noise?

Why would I even consider black when I need it for storage, and low noise?

Bubben that's why I wrote underneath Go for a WD Caviar RED "more stable operation"

And although they're rated for RAID scenario means they're in a way better for single drive use

Honestly, I would just get the cheapest available 4tb drive. If you prefer to get WD then get the green drive. Just make sure you test your drive. Take a look at the thread below.

I say neither. Don't waste your money and get a Barracuda 4TB.

The WD Red NAS Drives are the preferred backup and storage drives due to their reliability. The WD Green Drives just excel in power saving features. If you're putting files and data on the drive that is sensitive to you or valuable then get the Red drives. Otherwise, the Green will be fine.

Why the F**K would you still buy WD considering their reliability is severely low and has a bad RMA?
