Games are a lot more advanced than they used to be. Plus a lot of the developers don't know how to properly optimize from the start so Nvidia and AMD have to fix the issues in the drivers instead.

Odd question, but when & why did we start getting game ready drivers. Thinking back, we could go ages without driver updates. 

Drives would enable openGL or Directx, (or Glide) and the game engine was coded for that & it all worked. 

So why do we now have drivers specific for each game & it seems to run like shit otherwise...?

I can kinda see SLI/Xfire profiles, but why does each game need a driver profile?

Game Ready is a marketing and not an engineering term.

 

The term for actually ready drivers in windows is WHQL (it literally means approved by the Windows Hardware Quality Lab)

Basically, it's last minute performance fixes. the game will most likely work fine without it's respective game-ready driver, but if a specific part of a game doesn't play well with a specific part of the NVidia Maxwell drivers (Just an example) then Nvidia will fix that in the game-ready driver
