This PC is gonna be "HUUUUGGEEE" ~DT

TL;DR & OPEN QUESTIONS

  •    I'm building a new PC and want your informed opinion. Looking to game and view at a lot of cat pictures without ever closing a single Chrome tab.

Open Questions:

  1. Monitor Choice              - Acer Predator XB271HU or ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q? (or suggestion- e.g. wait for new, upcoming model release. This is the only component for which I will wait past December.)
  2. NVMe Setup                  - use (2)x Samsung 960 EVO 250GB in RAID 0 - OR - (1)x 960 EVO 500GB?
  3. Any known issues in transferring Windows 10 to the new machine?
  4. Graphic Card                 - What is the best Rated GTX 1070 Variant?
  5. Cables                           - Anything better than CableMod? (https://cablemod.com)
  6. Missed Opportunities?!

**************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

THE BUILD

Execution Plan and Timeline:

  1. Planning - October to November 2016
  2. Purchase - Black Friday/Cyber Monday until Christmas (Is there some "best" time to buy? Other wise I'll watch camelcamelcamel and buy when something pops up discounted.)
  3. Assemble  - Before Christmas

Forum Sticky Questions:

  1. Budget & Location: Budget - Whatever it costs to meet requirements... but must be <[REDACTED] USD. Location - United States
  2. Aim: Current PC BSODs more often than Trump says HUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE.
  3. Monitors: GSync is a must. I'd prefer 120HZ(+). 4k/ultrawide or 1440p is a hard choice. I feel 4k &ultrawides are just too hard to drive for my price point.
  4. Peripherals: Already have a mouse, keyboard, speakers, and video camera
  5. Why are you upgrading: PCs are fun! Also, I'm hoping to play games at a higher fidelity and better FPS.

If you're talking 1440p 21:9 it's actually $1200 for G-sync, it's $800 for a free-sync version
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/vhkwrH/asus-monitor-rogswiftpg348q

I'd just go 4k IPS free-sync at around $500, although 40" 4k is better for productivity

Anyways there's my suggestion, comes with a 6 slot hardware fan controller for near complete control, Fury X because free-sync, really you could probably just live with an RX 480 and game at 1080p Ultra on the 4k display for AAA games until the 1080ti/Vega come out

Otherwise the set up is 200mm fan on top for intake, just needs a fan filter, and all the radiators exhaust heat outward, one 80mm fan for the bottom half to keep it fresh

40" is too big for me. You play on that?!

As for the PC parts, I'm looking more to refine my choices than go with an all together new setup.

As for my price out it comes to 2400ish.

I guess the monitor is in that $2400 price? because the CPU/GPU should be much better for that budget otherwise, although even then I don't know where the money went, just an unomptimized build is what I'm saying,

in any case 1440p 144hz IPS free-sync displays are around $550, so you're still saving like $250?

Didn't pick 4k because it's harder to drive. And I'd prefer 120Hz over 4k anyway. But that would be nice for work!

I don't care about 4K or G-sync myself,

he has a big budget and he seemed like he wanted a 4K and so I gave him it.

I myself prefer 1080p.

the wasabi mango does 1080p 120hz or 4k, dunno why none of the smaller monitors have that option, it would be the best thing to put on a 4k display

but ya I'd still suggest you just save money with free-sync, and probably wait for the 1080ti/Vega cards to go for a high end card

4k requires a titan XP for high-ultra settings ya, but for medium-high a Fury X can handle it decently in the average AAA game

Or you could get freesync and a RX 480, then once Vega is out get one of those.

Considering Gsync in your segment costs $400 this is a better value and you can sell or repurpose the RX 480 later.

Even if you're not going to ever close a Chrome tab, you won't max out 32GB, just get 16 and if you find yourself needing more (you shouldn't, most of the Chrome tabs can be stored on the pagefile), buy the other 16.

Added an IPS Freesync monitor for enhanced color accuracy.

No point paying $50 more for the RMi, the RMx is just as good.

I completely agree with this. I'm getting the extra memory because it'll be fun to play with. I'm going to use it as a RAM disk, for VMs, and to run my Hadoop cluster. Most of the time it will sit idle.

Still getting Gsync though. :)

I jest, Freesync is really not an option until AMD releases a GPU that competes with the GTX 1080.

Did I mention that you should wait for a 1080Ti? it will come just over the price of a GTX 1080 and will be at least 25% faster.

I removed the 3k price. I think it's just confusing you guys. I'm happy to pay less to get what I need. That was just the arbitrary price I picked. There's a difference in not wanting to spend more than 3k and "wanting to spend 3k".

I see.

You'll be fine on a GTX 1070 or Fury X (the Fury X is a good 15% slower, so make sure you don't pay more than $350), and corresponding Adaptive Sync monitor.

You could go on air cooling to save money, AIOs cost a lot more for not a lot more performance.
