How many cameras?

How long do you want the video?

How much do you want to spend?

All will work. Id personally buy ipcams and get a server to controll them as i already have cat 5 running everywhere and they only need a cat5 with poe(no seprate power cable

Yes you need to know how long you want to roll, then reroll.

I'd say any system would work, but I'd want something where I can view everything on my cell and pc.

I remember years ago, I parked in behind a repair garage, tire running low needed air at 2am. No security, but owner saw me from his house on vid. So he had motion sensors.

I cant tell you how many times I watch The First 48, and they show crappy footage that is useless.

Or they find a cam and its fake or not working.

if you got a whole sale place near costco BJ's ect they have good systems . i picked up a 8 camera system last summer for i think 400 . also you get some choice if you dont mind looking at a few locations you can get old school BCN connectors , wire think Coaxial wire or a system that uses ethernet wire . i learned the latter is simpler for outdoor runs . i personal would not buy it online its better to pick out it in person . most of this stuff is for company's or small businesses not someone doing their home with security cameras

do you need nightvision/inferred  ? what res do you want 1080p 720p or the HDd res  for the cameras .

with my system with all 8 running i get 1 month of saved video 2tb purple drive . dont know if all models come with crap drives in them . mine had a no name OEM hdd that wasnt even sata I or ment to run 24/7 .i currently only have 2 cameras running and last i check i could go back 6 months still . for brands lorex is what i have works very well so far the interface to control it via tv . but it works . before you buy one check reviews since you dont want to buy a crap Chinese knockoff  one .

saw above you want 9-10 of them so your stuck buying a 16 system unless you can get away with a 8 camera system . first link is a brand i have and it works well second one is the best i can find one is bnc other is ethernet cable . if you know how to make ethernet cable connections its that simple .

no hdd in second link one so add 200-400$ for a 2-4tb purple drive (X2?)

note for OP

something i found out bnc is not waterproof connections unless you spend stupid amounts on *(insert brand here ) cables meant for outdoor connections .
