DAC vs on board

fabsiguy

so I recently bought a pair of AKG k545's and they are great, the only thing I'm wandering is if they could be better. I am currently running a MSI 970 gaming motherboard that seems to have good onboard audio, I was wondering whether I should spring for a external DAC/amp or go with a sound card, or just stick with the onboard AUDIO? Any suggestions?

I know a little about sound cards, and I say no. Your headphones seem NORMAL enough to not justify a $80 sound card.

the onboard audio is fine.

if the audio isn't loud enough for you get a amp.

"seems to have good onboard audio" STOP right there. That sounds like you're happy with the sound you're getting. If that's the case, then don't spend any more money. Also, sound cards are garbage.

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

As someone who fell down the very expensive and very stupid "Am I getting enough out of my fancy headphones?" hole and was misled by a bunch of audiophile wankery it makes me so happy to see reasonable advice in threads like this.
