It doesn't sound like you need a NAS, it sounds like you just need additional storage.

Are you unable to add storage to your existing system?

You do not want to go down the path of storing games on network storage unless to merely have a backup of the game.

I agree with @Dark, consumer-grade NAS devices cap at 1 Gb/sec theoretical speed, which is slower than lots of hard drives these days. For music, you can have a look at Volumio, a Debian-based distribution geared towards music enthusiasts. I attached a Raspberry Pi 2 to a Hi-Fi set and it works like a charm.

@Captain_WD to the rescue lol. Sounds like you just need locally attached storage. Then just share it from your desktop.

Exactly what I mean

You originally wanted a NAS. How can local storage be exactly what you need?

Store program on your main drive, and consider a USB 2/3/C (If you have it) portable hard drive for files, photos and video.

You could upgrade your current disk to one of a higher capacity.

Hi there :)

Fir simple network storage where you can keep massive data, media and files you could check WD My Cloud and, if you prefer to have a multi-bay NAS with RAID options, WD My Cloud Mirror. Either of them should provide you with the ability to access and store your data remotely over the network and over the Internet.

Mind that if you get a NAS you won't be able to install games on it as they require local storage rather than network and even if you use things like iSCSI the connection won't be good enough for smooth gaming. If you simply want an external drive to expand your local storage I would suggest checking out drives like WD My Book and WD Elements Desktop.

Please, provide more info on what you are planning to do and what is your current system and storage pool. :)

My idea was to use Ethernet to transfer it

NAS devices usually use Ethernet connection to routers to connect to the network and work with other devices. You can't really use a NAS as a local drive and connect it directly to a computer. There are ways but it involves some tweaks and the drive won't be recognized as a local drive which is needed if you want to install applications or games on it.

Nothing. You can in theory map a network share to a drive letter in Windows, but the access times over the network are painfully slow if you intend to run a game from it or any programs for that matter. A NAS is for bulk storage, so ISO files, video, music, possibly documents (redundancy is key), photos and stuff like that. Keep OS, software and games internal.

I have to disagree with you here. You most definitely can install games on a network drive versus local, as I have done it with Steam using SMB/CIFS. Origin is another story, but it definitely works with Steam.

As @NelizMastr explained, NAS devices are designed for massive storage of media such as video, music and photos, documents, backups, image files and other general storage which you don't necessarily need on your main system. As @Godlygamer23 pointed out and explained, there are ways to install games on a NAS but they involve using other applications and complicate the whole process and would suffer from the lower connection speed and access times.

My suggestion is to simply get a WD Elements Portable or a WD My Book and directly connect it to your system and use it as storage/backup lodaction. :)
