Headphone selection

I am trying to find a new pair of headphones for on the go. I am looking for a closed back around the ear pair that has really good sound quality. My budget is $400 and that includes an amp if necessary. I do not know what sound signature I like. I was looking into the beyerdynamic dt770 pro and the audio technical Msr7. Any other suggestions?

Check out oppo pm3, it has somewhat neutral signature, portable, and very well-built.

I had the same requirement as you about a year ago, and after listening to and trying on lots of headphones I decided on some Denon AH-MM400s.  They're really well built, and very comfortable. They fold up and come with a carry bag if you need them to be portable.  They are easy to drive and I use them on my laptop, and iPhone without an amp.

 

Headphone comfort and sound is very subjective, but I'd suggest listening to a pair of MM400s.

I vote for the Oppo PM-3 as well. They're a fantastic, and fun sounding headphone with great isolation. Well worth it.

The MSR7s are very good, especially for the price. the dt770 are also good, but not so much for on the go, they're too big (for me at least). A good alternative would be a Beyerdynamic T51, my personal daily drivers, which are nice and compact and deliver superb sound quality. They've also dropped quite a bit in price, so they're even better value now.

Why does every one keep suggesting the oppo pm-3 are they extremely good or something

Pretty good, there are arguably better in the price range (thx00/he400i) but you're looking for something portable and closed.

I mean, excluding the M50/X, that's pretty much the only reason that a lot of people will recommend something...

I agree. But the Oppo's do a damn good job of isolation, so they're nice to listen to on the go. (something that neither the semi open THX00 nor the open backed HE400i can claim. I sure you knew that, iShad, I'm just clarifying for the sake of others)
