I originally used the optical out on the asus motherboard, but now I want to use front speaker out jack. . . i've switched the default over in the playack menu to speakers from optical out, and when sound plays u can see the eq bar moving, but no sound is coming through speakers. . . I've plugged ipod into speakers and it works with that, but the jack to jack lead from speakers to Motherboard is producing nothing?

I'm not really sure, that sound is decent tbf, I'll probably decide christmas time, was just sort of wondering how much more benefit it would be, I don't use my comp for listening to music see. If I'm on my comp it's usually just YT, gaming or something like that.

Well, if you do decide you want something in the future, just get a cheap DAC like the Behringer UCA 202 if you're only using speakers. I doubt you'll notice a huge change in sound quality.

FiiO's D3 is another cheap option but it's optical input and USB powered. Behringer's products are hit and miss, the UCA series is good as long as you're no expecting anything great from the headphone port.
