GPU for 1440p

So I'm considering upgrading my desktop PC.  Currently I have it hooked up to one ASUS 1080p display for gaming, and a Dell 1280x1024 display for when I do work and want the extra screen real estate.  I'm considering upgrading to just one 1440p display, but I don't like my GTX 660 Ti would keep up with that display.  It works great for 1080p high to ultra settings, but I know it will struggle at 1440p.  What GPU would be good for 60fps gaming at 1440p.  I'm not posting a budget because I  honestly don't know how much I'm looking to spend.  I'm just looking to get a ballpark idea to see if this makes sense to shell out the cash for.  Thank you for your help!

minimum should be an rx 480, enough for medium-high 1440p for a 2-3 years. if you can, gtx 1070 will max out games at 1440p.

the 1070 or 980 ti is perfect for 1440p. the 1060 or 480 will be able to as well but you may have to reduce graphical settings in more intensive games

 

alternatively you can get a 1080

Best GPU for 1440p - GTX 1070

Midranger/more affordable 1440p - 8GB RX480 or 6GB GTX 1060 (if you get a Freesync 1440p monitor go for the 480).

i think 1080 is too much for 1440p. 1070 is good though

Meh, if you really want max visual quality you could go 1080, but then I would go for a 144Hz G-Sync panel.

Depends on what you're doing. I have a 1080 for 1080p but I'm trying to push ultra and 144FPS as close as possible. A 1070 would do 60+ 1440 pretty well but a 1080 will give you more leeway.

gtx 1070 is enough for ultra 1440p.

1070 is the best for 1440p right now. Alternative choices would be a 980 Ti or Fury X (provided that you can find them for really cheap compared to the 1070, not worth it otherwise) even though the lack of VRAM in the Fury X can be a bit limiting.

Thank you all for your replies.  I've done some price checking, and I just can't justify spending $600+ on a GPU and 1440p monitor.  I thought it would be closer to $400/$450, but I guess that was just wishful thinking.  I don't need 1440p by any means, but after using the 3k screen on my Razer Blade 14 (2014 model), I wanted something a bit nicer for my desktop.  However, the gaming experience on my desktop at 1080p is surprising great still, despite it using 4 year old parts (MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition and i5-3570k (stock speed)).  Anyway, thanks for the help.
