Alright, so here's the thing, i have an msi geforce gts 450. In gpu-z it shows up as a GF116, but GF116 is gtx 550 ti. What is happening here? And would i benefit or would it work at all if i tried to flash the 550 ti bios on this card! My cards brand is MSI, they made a gtx 550 ti card with the same design as mine even cooler!

Relax with the crazy bumps.

The GF116 in the GTX 550 Ti is just an update to the GF106, where the last set of ROPs + memory controller isn't disabled. Your card has 16 ROPs, so it does have that set of ROPs disabled.

It's possible GPU-Z is misidentifying the closely related GPUs, or maybe behind the scenes the line between GF106 and GF116 was really so blurred that they were basically the same thing.

Either way, trying to flash the BIOS would not work. Even if the ROPs are there and functional, the memory interface is cut down to 128-bit rather than 192-bit, and those extra memory chips just aren't there.

Meaning, that GTX 550 ti is an overclocked GTS 450? I would basically brick the card, because of the memory bus on the 550 ti is larger then the one on gts 450?

The GTX 550 Ti uses sort-of the same chip as the GTS 450, but with the ROP and memory controllers untouched, where a third of it is deactivated on the 450.

And yeah trying to flash your 450 to a 550 Ti would be a problem because, even if the ROPs are there, the memory chips are not.

Well then try it.
I'm pretty sure it will instantly die likeSakkura explained, but if you're that curious, then go ahead.

He didn't say i would screw up the card he said

That GPU is OLD REALLY OLD, if i'm upgrading then it better be an RX 480 it's only 200$-250$. You see there hasn't been a reason for me to upgrade not that i can't have one and i can tell you that i want to have something that runs Battlefield 1 @60fps max settings.

I would say try flashing the custom bios when you leave 480 comes in, so then when it bricks, which I believe it will, I you can just replace it and use it as a coaster with fans.

A 750Ti is not REALLY OLD by any means. It's still based on Maxwell and is easily still one of the best options out there for a quick and dirty upgrade. Hell, you can find new ones on Ebay for $75-80 now.

I know that this is quite an old thread, I have tried this and it actually worked for me.  I have a GTS 450.  When trying to OC from the stock speed of 783 up to over 900mhz or 1900mhz on the mem clock.. i kept having problems with screen freezes and crashes i installed the bios from an ASUS GTX 550Ti and now its running at 975mhz on the GPU clock and 2052mhz in the memory clock. Its running at 35 degrees Celcius at idle and around 61 degrees during gaming so far i havent had any problems.. i hope this can help someone else have a free GPU upgrade.. The thing to watch out for is to make sure that the bios that you download from Techpowerup.com is compatible with the memory modules installed on the gpu..
