External Windows Device

Essentially, what I've been trying to do is to make a bootable Windows drive and then use an adapter to hook up to USB and boot to Windows from it. This is to aid in troubleshooting laptops if I don't want to open them to put in a different drive for whatever reason. What I did was put an SSD in my laptop and install Windows from a flash drive. I then took the SSD back out and hooked it up to an adapter. I plugged the drive into my laptop, but whenever I try to boot from the drive, my computer gets to the manufacturer splash screen and then suddenly turns off for no apparent reason. I've put the same drive back into the computer and plugged it in through SATA, and the computer has booted just fine. I'm not sure at all what could be causing that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
