GPU Water Loop Worth It?

Hey guys.  So right now I run 980 SLI and I OC somewhere between 1400-1500 MHz.  Both cards can reach around 1515MHz individually but together I've had tons of issues.  Last night after some tweaking I think I've got 1500MHz stable but I need to do a lot more stress testing.  Last stable for sure OC is around 1420 MHz but I think I found a sweet spot of voltage, clock speeds and fanspeeds to keep the new clocks in check.  The biggest problem is thermals, both cards reach low to mid 80's and I'm not sure how this clock will hold up to extended playtime.  

 

My question is: should I invest in a GPU water loop to eek out another 100-200MHz and gain around 5-10 FPS (at 4K) or simply wait for something worth upgrading to?  The benefits to the water loop is aside from the GPU blocks I can reuse it for future builds and the blocks add resell value to the cards.  But I dunno if it's worth spending $400-600 doing it for such a small performance upgrade when I can spend that money on a GTX 1180 or whatever and probably handily beat that performance.

water loop and upgrade in two generations or upgrade next generation.

For the price of water cooling, you could sell the cards and get a Titan XP instead

Just keeping this here as a In my experience GPU watercooling is usually not worth the time and money for every day use. If your cards were overheating and already top of the line then yeah that would justify it.

seeing you potentially will not be able to use both cards in games (lack of SLI support) and playing in 4K i'd say move to something better. But if you want "a fun little project" and have the money go for it

OP is saying buying everything for a water loop wouldn't be a total waste because aside from the gpu blocks, the parts could be used on future hardware. Agreed on the first part.

I'm pretty happy with my current performance.  SLI support hasn't been a big obstacle and I can play most games in the 45-60 FPS range with high to ultra quality settings.

 

In this case it's more of a "I want to water cool GPU's going forward and I enjoy overclocking as a hobby" thing.  Maybe I'll budget out the water cooling  hardware I'd need and see if it makes sense then.

I think I was going to try this at one point but there wasn't enough room for it.  plenty of slots available but I think the issue was clearance in my case.  I'll take another look at it, might be worth experimenting with.  I think swapping my cards around a few weeks ago made a huge difference since the EVGA ACX2.0 GTX 980 has thermally unstable memory and it was crashing long before temps or anything else got past 80 degrees. (Despite being the higher quality card of the two.  Apparently a custom BIOS sort of fixes it.)
