My Bitcoin project

My project, originally called Crypto Sense, but that's really just a project codename, is a Bitcoin (and potentially other crypto's) payment system, but like nothing that is currently available.

 

The aim is to be for Bitcoin what card processors are for Fiat banking. An easy and simple way to conduct payments on a back-end without needing to interface with it. All transactions happen on the blockchain, there is no off-chain accounting. The difference is that by keeping a record of all users transactions, and keeping users Bitcoins in the hosted wallet service, the system can guarantee that there is no double spending. In the same way a Visa debit transaction makes an authorization sometimes days before debiting the account, this would do the same for Bitcoin. It would verify that the funds are there, make the transaction on the blockchain, and when a TXID is returned, it will adjust account balance and available balance for both parties. The system would verify each TXID on the blockchain in bulk by running through a list of unconfirmed TXID's, and once they are confirmed by the network, updating account balances.

 

For online purchases this is useless, it adds an extra layer to using Bitcoin, and makes it more complicated. Where it would give improvements is physical locations. Payment terminals and smart cards, biometrics, combinations of the 2.

 

By using a network of CTM's (coin transaction machines), users would be able to buy, sell, manage accounts, register for services and even be provided with payment cards at the machine. The machines would be owned and operated by the customer buying them, and would not be tied into the back-end (Robocoin anyone?). All buying and selling is performed by the machine itself using a locally hosted full Bitcoin node. The owner sets all the rates, and the machine can also set buy/sell min and max limits to prevent exchange fluctuations leading to the machine selling Bitcoins at a loss.

 

So far nothing really new. Coinkite had terminals, although it seems they have dropped that venture, there's an entire range of Bitcoin ATM's out there, and I believe there is more than one hosted wallet service providing a guarantee that the payment will be made before network confirmation. What I am doing is combining these (and a few more concepts) into one service. Providing hosted multisig wallets, the infrastructure to allow hardware payment terminals and real-time "confirmation", CTM's to allow people to register for and use the services, and also a mechanism to protect merchants accepting Bitcoin payments from being stung by large price fluctuations. The last one I'm keeping to myself for now.

 

Currently I have the prototype CTM software with the basics working. Soon I will be writing a basic test version of the back-end account creation software along with the transaction tracking and transaction generation code. It's all in the early stages, but I have had a bit of interest in it, so I thought I'd post some more details :)

Seems very much so like you know what you are doing. The best of luck to you, and anything that will help Bitcoins become even more mainstream will only help everyone. You should keep frequent updates as you go.

It may seem like I know what I am doing, but this is quite a learning curve. My programming background is C on microcontrollers (actual C, not just Arduino abstraction, although I do use Arduino too) and Visual Basic 6 from years back. I'm programming most of it in C# as I prefer it to C++. I was going to use Linux for everything, but I have decided to put my personal preference and general dislike of being tied into Microsoft tools and Windows for the ease of development, and the huge array of hardware out there designed for point of sale and interactive terminals that's designed for and only works with Windows. For example, I have a double sided NCR thermal receipt printer that's worth enough to buy a pretty decent gaming rig, and it will only work on Windows.

 

When it comes to networking and data security, well, when I get beyond testing on Testnet I'll probably get some outside help with the client/server protocols and security. The CTM hardware will be locked down to the extent of using ATA locks on HDD's, and having the ITX board that runs it all in a secure enclosure. It will reset the BIOS if tampered with to ensure that the software, and also the local Bitcoin client cannot be tampered with. No security screws or anything, just a seal that states that the HDD is locked and opening the enclosure will erase the keys from the system.

 

May seem paranoid, but unlike banking ATM's, these are open to purchase by anyone, and I can't be accountable for a rogue operator stealing by tweaking application code or installing a modified Bitcoin client.

Thought I would provide a bit of an update.

 

I have got my new code to a working stage. I ended up re-writing a lot of what I had and it's taken me a few evenings rather than the few months worth of evenings that the last version did. Heavy use of classes and dynamic controls rather than Windows forms designer and one form per operation. I have also put a lot of work into creating a highly threaded application. There is a thread dedicated to grabbing images from a webcam and looking for QR (and other) codes, a thread just for communicating with a serial device that provides input from navigation keys and a note validator, and the main UI thread of course. There will be more threads that keep track of transactions and database work, but they're background tasks and not really important yet, the machine will at this point accept cash and send bitcoin, with printed receipt.

 

I plan on getting the machine built up soon, although with the building I live in likely to be condemned rather soon, getting a new place to live *may* interrupt that, but I'm still going to get as much as I can on this done :).
