So I think the next thing I'm going to upgrade is going to be my cpu. I know my cpu is fairly decent for its time but I want to think ahead. I'm looking for a cpu with more processing power, so rendering will be a breeze. Should I go with AMD considering they have higher core cpus for cheap. Or should I stick with Intel even though it costs more. I understand that I'll probably have to get different ram and a different mobo, but are there any really good cpus rumored to be coming out soon?

Kaby Lake should be released to consumers soon. I'd wait for that and then make a decision. Although the 6700K is a fantastic CPU. I wouldn't go with AMD just because their CPUs have lower clock speeds and I've had very bad experiences with their processors within the USA.

The 6700k has basically the same performance as a 4790k. At least that's what I've heard.

What's the difference between Kaby Lake and zen?

Kaby Lake is Intel's next generation of CPU. If I'm not mistaken it is further optimizing their 14 nanometer platform. Zen is AMD's new CPU lineup to compete with Intel also on 14nm. You could probably buy a skylake CPU and be just fine, it's just my preference to wait for something new and potentially more efficient in a case like this where these products will be out by the end of the year.

Myself, I can afford to wait another half a year if I needed to. My i5 3450 has been trucking along nicely for the past 4 years. If you're using something older or have a more demanding task in mind there's nothing wrong with buying now if you feel the need. The growth of CPU technology doesn't seem to be moving that quickly.

Yeah I think I'm fine, I can probably wait another 2 years. I only have a year on this cpu and I just updated my gpu to a 1070 so that's fine for a good year or two.
