Hey guys,

I am searching the market for a new laptop to use for my new job. This laptop will strictly be used for work purposes and programming. I have around $1900 to spend but want to keep it close to $1000 because I also need to get a docking station, extra power supply, and dual monitors.

Preferences

* atleast 12GB RAM

* Would prefer HDD and SDD

* i5/ i7

I was hoping you guys could help me out with suggestions. Thank you!

Hmmmm, I'd strongly suggest you look for a good keyboard. If you can, UX501VW has an option with a 60/96Wh (smaller battery has a HDD) battery and 16GB of RAM and 512GB NVMe SSD together with a i7 6700HQ and 960M (for CUDA acceleration or light gaming) - it's around 1500$ though. XPS 15 is also an option.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I am not too worried about the keyboard, because most of the time I will be hooking up my DAS 4 keyboard.

Believe me - good laptop keyboards are much easier to use than a separate one.

Well, at least look into a good screen - XPS 15 and UX501 have fantastic displays but both come around 1500$ - they use high-end IPS displays with very low PWM modulation meaning no flickering at low brightness.

I would say XPS 15 or 13, or maybe something like an ASUS ZenBook.

Agreed, XPS and ZenBook series are really dominating the scene

HP ZBook looks solid too, and maybe even something like a Precision 15, though these are a little more on the expensive side.

I'm not a fan of ZBooks - too little info on them available

It's very large and bulky - battery life is poor. Get a XPS 15 with an i3 if you don't need a GPU, get one with a 960M and i7 if you DO need a GPU - that or the UX501VW

Alrighty so for money wise I am thinking about buying the XPS 15 i5 for $1200. Then I would also buy another 8GB DDR4-2133 and add that in for $40. Does that sound pretty solid to you guys?

The i5's fan profile causes throttling - I'd get the i7 for better temps
