144hz display on laptop?

TobiasMB

I own an Asus GL552VW(https://www.komplett.no/product/854096/pc-nettbrett/pc-baerbar/gaming-pc-er/asus-rog-gl752vw-173-full-hd-matt) and I am looking for a screen to use for it. Been thinking of getting a 144hz display but not sure if the laptop will support it. This is the screen I've been looking at:https://www.komplett.no/product/774683/datautstyr/skjermer/skjermer/asus-24-led-vg248qe. The thing that makes me the most worried it wont work is the HDMI port on the laptop, if that will support 144hz. If anybody knows if it will work or not I would be pleased to hear.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you're using HDMI 1.3+ and you should be good. Personally I prefer dual link DVI or DP.

But does the graphicscard support HDMI 1.3 or any higher?

Make sure the display out adapters on the laptop actually connect to the discrete GPU and not the integrated GPU as a lot of laptops will connect at least one of them (usually the HDMI port) to the integrated GPU.

Ok, do you know where or how to check this? On the PC itself or will I need to search around the internet?

What do you mean by this? That the graphics card wont show 144fps so it won't be worth it? Or that it will affect the framerate so it will be unplayable with the display?(From what I've read the refreshrate  doesn't affect the framerate:http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1915757/higher-monitor-gpu-power.html) I just don't fully understand your comment.

You can barely get 60fps with it in modern games - 144fps is next to impossible

But I mostly play games like CS:GO and LoL where I get well over 144 fps. And I don't really care about keeping the graphics at max(If I did I would have bought a more powerful PC) So even then I get more than good enough FPS imo 144hz feels like something that will benefit me. But I'm not the most educated in this area so...

Your laptop already has a good 60Hz screen

Yes but I need a display for it so I wont break my neck looking down while sitting at a desk. I'm quiet tall so I look down while sitting at a comfortable level at my desk...

Have you tried opening it wider? Or getting a cooling stand? Those are cheaper.

Have tried both but neither really worked well. Probobly gonna go for a 144hz or just a 60hz display to keep for my laptop when I'm home.

I think few people check for this, but a way to tell on the laptop is plug in something on the HDMI port and see if it shows up on your discrete GPU's control panel.

Then you would have to move your arms up higher, which isn't good for ergonomics. Laptops in general aren't very ergonomic to use.

The VG248QE doesn't take more than 60 Hz over HDMI.
