Upgrading by adding an extra GPU or replacing current cards.

Hey,

I'm looking to upgrade my rig and i was wondering about finding the best option when upgrading my GPUS.

Currently i have two 680's 4GB edition by evga in SLI.

I have an Asrock Extreme 9 board and it's capable of 3 way SLI.

My question is should i get a 3rd 680 or replace both 680's for another gpu.

All opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hmmm. If you dont mind me asking why the need to upgrade?

Also it would help if we knew your Current Rig set-up, usage scenario and budget. :)

two 680's with 4gb is beast man. After looking at some tri sli benchmarks it scales terribly in fact it only gains 5 fps in battlefield 3. I would keep the sli setup and upgrade maybe to something in the 800 series if there is a crazy powerful single card solution.

Why would you want to upgrade? Your 2 680s are very powerful and it would be stupid to sell those 680s.

And i wouldn't really recommend adding the 3rd GPU since the scaling wouldn't be as good as you might expect.

My cards might be good, but i'm experiencing lag and very very high temperatures running games on 2560x1600.

I'm not sure how a 3rd card would scale but what would be better if i sold 2 of them?

You need to get better cooling man. Those two 680s are almost two 770s and you see how they preform. Just sit tight, get some better cooling, and overclock those bad boys. Also at the 680s cant use all 4gbs or thier vram without a vram overclock. Do that and it might help with the stuttering at that res.

This is what I'd do.

Add more fans to case.

Apply fresh thermal paste to GPU's

If temps are still high purchase 290x crossfire game over.

Or if your a EVGA fan which is understandable. 780 SLI with waterblock.

If you going to break the bank do it right.

The only reason I see for you to upgrade is to play games in triple monitor setup. I price is not an obstacle and you don't necessarily want the best performance for the buck, then why not? Tough, if you are not sure, or you care for performance by the buck, then don't get a new one, just get water cooling and overclock those bad boys. Not seeing a reason to buy new cards like 780s or so. Doesn't make sense to me.
