Hey guys, new to unRAID and loving it so far in my testing.
I am building my home nas and I am adding a UPS but the one I bought is not recognized by unRAID. My local store (shoutout to cellotech) is awesome and have permitted me to return the one  bought and just pay the difference for an alternative model.

I am looking at APC Smart-UPS SMC 1000VA 230V Tower (SMC1000I) will unRAID see this and use this as I want unRAID to shutdown when the UPS gets to 60% capacity.

Hopefully someone out there has some ideas.

An alternative is this one: http://www.i-store.com.au/product/?CategoryID=0&productid=12403

Cheers fellas.

Could you post up the specs of your home NAS so we can get an idea of how much power draw the system needs?

There's not much difference between the SMC and the SMT, the SMT having a better display and the ability to install a separate network card for network based UPS shutdown (Most people are fine with just the USB cable tied to the NAS).

Also, I would check out Eaton, they make really good UPS units as well.

Hi,

Specs are:

duel l5630 Xeon processors,

Microstar MB

24GB ECC DDR3 ram

2x 8TB (1 parity)

1x 6TB

4x 5TB

2x 240GB SSD Cache

1000w FSP Aurum Pro PSU

I am mostly wanting to buy a UPS that unRAID will work with directly and not have to jump through hoops.

The one I am eyeing up atm is this: http://www.i-store.com.au/product/?CategoryID=0&productid=17828

Cheers guys

From what I read for Unraid, any APC UPS unit will work fine with Unraid with the USB cable. I don't use unraid so I don't know the specifics or how to set it up.

That is a good UPS and a good size for your load (I'm doubtful it uses more than 200-300 watts under normal load). My own NAS with 15 4TB drives pulls about 300-350 watts under load, about 200-250 on idle.

FSP power never ends 2000w

It has a USB to comp but sadly is not recognized by unRAID

Ah, I see. I also read that certain Cyberpower UPS units will work, but I'd rather stick with APC because Unraid has a specific plugin made for APC units.

Yep if unRAID has a plugin for APC then that's the best to use. The better APC units are the RT line but you do pay a lot more for them.

For any APC unit you must replace the batteries in them every 3 years, no really do this as the batteries aren't that great and the self monitoring to tell you if the batteries are bad isn't that good.

Agreed - most of the APC units I've dealt with have quite happily said the battery was 100% and would have a 20-30 minute runtime (depending on the load and model of course) but then as soon as it ran a self test or the power failed, they immediately failed. This was always after 3-5 years. All batteries degrade, but APC ones seem to be a bit more extreme about it towards the end of their life (e.g. if the runtime for the battery was degrading at a modest, steady rate for a while, then after 3 years the rate of degradation skyrockets)

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate it!!

Do any of you know of a specific UPS that works with unRAID that is likely to hold up better over time?

I can replace the batteries after 3 years that is not a problem I think.

Replacing the batteries every 3 years is fine, there are better ones but sticking to something that is supported by unRAID will be more beneficial. Having to replace the batteries is something you have to do with all UPS's but if an Eaton says the battery is fine then it is fine and if it says the battery is bad then it is bad.
