How does this work

How does this work. In my house I only have a router for intelnet. I was looking on some forms and it says router only alow you to connect to local "servers" ,but modems is how you can connect to the internet. But I don't have one. Does my isp have one for me? Also I get internet form those "beam" dishes linus showed in is "25km wifi video.

 No it not look it up it's and Netgear N150 router only.

Is the dish pointed at the sky? If so you have satellite internet. Is it pointed along the ground, or towards a tower or mountain or other tall structure that you can see? If so you have wireless internet from a WISP. In either of these situations, your router is being provided an ethernet connection by the hardware on the dish, and your router is seperating between your ISP's network (the WAN, which eventually through a few steps provides your internet connection), and your network (your LAN)

 

EDIT: a modem is only needed when the type of connection is not ethernet. So they are used for cable and DSL connections, which are the most common in the developed world.
