I thought blower fan blow in one direction. How does it properly cool.

It blows the air is the both directions, so to the front and the back as this card has 2 chips on it.

It then makes me curious as to why something like a titan or 7970/280x/290x reference cards have the blower on the end.

fan draws air in through the fans motor axis and blows it outwards centrifugally (in this case primarily horizontally) across the fins and out the back, this leads to a cheap and effective design that gets the air out of the case and doesnt create a "wide" card the heatsink can also be 2 slots tall.

fan draws air in through the fans motor axis and blows it outwards centrifugally accross the fins to either side of it over the top of both gpus, this leads to half the heat going out the back and half going into the case, this is relatively cheap (still one motor but more heat pipes and fins..) maintains a "slim" card and only a minor penalty in temperitures. again the heatsink can be 2 slots tall.

This draws air in through the fans axis and blows it out the back behind the fans through the heatsink and disspates over the board/out the sides and to a MUCH less extent sometimes out the back, this is optimal for cooling and noise (excluding water) because a larger fan can move more air through more fins increasing cooling while minimising noise, the downside is it requires 2 fans and more space creating a larger card and hence it costs a bit more and the heatsink is now only 1 slot tall as the fans take up a slot themselfs unless you go tripple slot.which...yeah.

this slowly pulls your pc along moving away from any heat generated whatsoever. (its actually a good cooler, bigger fans=better)

then look at gtx 690,also dual gpu. 

That doesnt use a blower style fan

6990 suck air from back/top and exaust in front

so you are right sry.so it seems that you know already

in this case (air exiting out both sides) the 690's fan acts as an impeller, i.e a centrifugal fan in the same way as the 6990.

so they both work the same.

the difference is the impeller on the 6990 relies on the expulsion of air out of the sides to create a vacuum which then draws air in, 100% of the air coming out of the fan is sideways through the fins.

The 690's axial fan/impeller pushes air down towards the pcb and to an extent sideways (lets say 50% down and 50% sideways), the air that hits the mount/pcb is then directed sideways, so they both do a pretty close job.

when i was learning about jet engines as a kid (like 12, man I feel old and I'm only 24..) i read that early engines like sir frank whittles were based on the impeller design much like a cars turbocharger which pushed air out the sides, mixed it burnt it in canisters and then it went back to the turbine..

later/modern jets use an axial design where the air comes in the front and carries on in a straight line.

from what ive read at the time...

centrifugal fans generate a more consistent pressure and hence were better for low speed aircraft (or lower fan speeds i guess).

axial flow fans are more efficient at higher speeds because they can move more air, (means when your fans ramp up they can cool better)

this is why aftermarket companies like xfx/gigabyte/msi etc use 2x axial fans instead of slapping on a sticker like they used to in the 8800gt/9800gt/gtx280 days.
