3GB is not enough for anything, not to mention the 3GB 1060 is also slower than the 6GB one due to the cut shaders.

I'd say the 470 due to the VRAM

Agree with Don. However the 470 also comes in an 8GB version. Might be worth a look, since plenty of games already uses more than 4GB of VRAM.

I have 2 machines with 3GB of VRAM - I've been crashing repeatedly due to not enough memory at 1080p - trust me it's not enough for anything

Go with as much Vram as you can afford then. 6-8GB is normal today. The farther you go under, the bigger texture problems you will get now and in the future. 4GB will give you the second highest texture setting in the demanding AAA games.

i know the 480 is better

The 480 4 GB really isn't that much better than the 470. Out of the box they're within a few frames of each other in most games. If the 470 is a lot cheaper, that's a great deal.

Crashing, you say? I'd expect poor performance or stuttering if you're out of VRAM, but crashing sounds like there might be more to the story.

Expect frequent crashing, stuttering and poor performance. As said - 3GB is not enough. There is even a news article on the subject. Check it.

Depends on the pricing of course. But do notice that all but the NVidia sponsored Rise of the Tomb Raider, the DX12 and Vulkan titles all works better on the AMD card. SO it depends on which games you are going to play. The latest 16.9.1 AMD driver lowered the draw calls in DX11, so it gives a performance boost in all DX11 titles as well.

1060 might be great right now, but like all NVidia cards, it will be hopelessly obsolete in 1-2 years and should be surpassed by the 470 in pretty much everything. Take a look at AMD 290 vs an Nvidia 780 today. It's outright pathetic.

Window ran out of memory = System memory related not VRAM.

Didn't even broke 2.9GB even with HD Textures mod + Reshade and that with card that have 6GB VRAM, i recall it barely broke 2GB with my 290x. Vanilla most probably use less VRAM.
Max Hairwork + 8xMSAA.

Did notice the game chug system memory like no tomorrow though, if i didn't set enough system Virtual Memory i probably get not enough memory error.

More than 4GB:

  1. Rise of the Tomb Raider
  2. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  3. Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
  4. Rainbow Six Siege
  5. Shadow of Mordor
  6. Doom

These are off the top of my head.. probably more out there, and that number will only grow. Probably this year alone with Watch Dogs 2.
