I've been building a computer on paper and I'm almost done and I think I'm ready to begin the physical building. I'm going to buy a 1080 but people say buy custom but the reference seems to be cheaper and that was why people say to buy custom be sure those were cheaper. I'm in a cunudrum. Please help me make a good decision

What case are you going to use?

in 9/10 situations a custom one will be the better decision. Mainly because of the noise. Most custom cards don't even spin their fans till 60°C

The reference is actually more expensive if you buy the founders edition. There are versions of the founders edition cooler that are much less expensive. For example the MSI aero. I would only recommend those blower style founders edition style coolers if you have a small form factor case or multiple GPU's instead of blowing all that hot air in your case, it exhausts it out the back of your case. The customs on the other hand are perfect for single GPU's, they dispense their hot air into the case, results in much better temperatures and possibly more overclocking ability. Those are typically the same price or less than the founders edition.

[CPU: 4.3 GHZ I5-4670K] [MB: Gigabyte Z87-D3H] [RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1833 MHZ (8GB)]

[GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1070] [PSU: Corsair CX-750] [Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo]
[Storage: 2TB 7200RPM HDD / 500GB Samsung 850 EVO ] [Case: ThermalTake Chaser-MK 1]

[Keyboard:Corsair K70 RGB Cherry MX] [Mouse: Razer DeathAdder] [Monitor: 2 x ASUS 24 INCH IPS (1440p Soon)]

custom cards generally run way cooler and quieter if you have a good case airflow, they eject hot air into the case itself, referece mainly sucks in air from inside the case and ejects it out the back. great for small formfactors and waterblocks but not much else.
