So I'm debating between the 2 following laptops:

HP Omen 15: i7-6700HQ, 965M w/ 4GB GDDR5, 12GB RAM, 1080 display, 1TB hard drive w/ 128 GB SSD ~$945 USD

MSI GS40 14": i7-6700HQ, 970M w/ 3GB DDR5, 16 GB RAM, 1080 display, 1TB hard drive w/ 128 GB SSD (NVMe) ~$1,500 USD

I'm only looking for moderate gaming at most. I play titles like Overwatch, Leauge, Don't Starve, No Mans Sky, Doom, and Crysis 3 on my desktop to name a few.

I know both of these can run these games (although at different settings), but I'm wondering if it's worth paying the $550 difference for the 970, a smaller form factor (something I was aiming for), and USB-C.

I'm just a College Kid that needs to do productivity has well as gaming.

What do you guys think?

I would wait up for the mobile 1050s to start popping up, or just get a 1060 laptop (if you find one with decent cooling).

GS40 as well as most 10 series laptops have heat issues - severe heat issues and throttling. I'd suggest going for the Asus GL502VT - the 970M version.

I think I've decided to go with this: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8151-clevo-p650rp6.html

just adding in an SSD and Bluetooth. I do with it was thinner though, but i suppose I'll sacrifice a little thinness for the USB_C  support, better thermals and more powerful graphics.

mate. Why xoticpc? lpc-digital is great. They're setup to be a prema partner soon so you'll get access to a Z170-like bios with increased stability and options. Unless the price difference is huge. And honestly I would just get them barebones and put my own ram and ssd in anyway.

I've just used xotic before and never had a problem so going with what I know.

sure. if you haven't ordered it I would highly recommend ordering it from HIDevolution or LPC-digital. If not xoticpc is also good too.
