This is going to sound stupid, but I really need to bounce ideas off some people.

If I bought a 27 inch predator monitor would it be a good idea to buy a gtx 1080 for about $650 or a gtx 1070 for about $435? If I bought the 1440p 144+Hz monitor for around $785 should should I spend an extra ~$215 for a gtx 1080? If I did that, should I just purchase the 4k 27 inch version for an additional ~$115 over the 1440p monitor? Or do you think I should just buy the $900 4k monitor and a gtx 1070, and then buy a new gpu next year?

As it is at the moment I am leaning towards a gtx 1070 and the 1440p predator monitor, but I am thinking the monitor is something I will very rarely upgrade again.

Extra thoughts for discussion. Would it be better to just go full out on the x34 monitor and then buy a gtx 1080 and potentially sli another 1080 further down the road when things get cheaper? I have mixed feeling about 21:9 because it is really great, but then at the same time I wouldn’t be utilized 100% of the time.

Extra Extra thoughts, what IPS monitor would could compete with an Acer Predator? People talk a lot about other TN panels, but I am more interested in investing in IPS.

Both the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 will do great with the ultrawide monitor. Trust me, you're going to use all of the space in the ultrawide monitor when you get it. Makes things more efficient and the level of work is increased by a lot. I don't believe you will even need to SLI a GTX 1080 because the GTX 1070 is already capable of doing loads of work. I suggest going with the predator and GTX 1070 because you'll save a ton of money and not lose out on a lot of your gaming experience.

I believe a 1070 was fully capable of running a 3440 x 1440, but don't quote me on it. My 1070 is doing great with a 2560 x 1080 and maxes out most games I play. If you are worried about the performance, I suggest you do a little more research but I don't think getting a 1080 will actually give you a better experience. Youtube already supports 21:9 as well as many other games. The reason why there are black bars on YouTube videos are because the uploaded video is originally 16:9 and not actually 21:9. Trailers, movies, or anything that are uploaded in the 21:9 aspect, you will not experience any black bars whatsoever.

It really depends if you like the aspect ratio of 16:9 or 21:9. For me personally, I am never going back to 16:9 even if there's 8K. When playing games, you see A LOT more than everyone else and movies are the best. I never have the black bars on the top and bottom and it fills the screen without losing quality. The only downside of 21:9 would be black bars while watching youtube, but honestly I barely notice them at all.

4k ultrawide (the x34) needs 1080, 1070 would be enough for the 1440P setup. GPU is expensive upgrade so better spending once then twice. Agreed that the monitor you must first decide. Once you know that adjust GPU to monitor you get.

I am quite biased and will always say go for Ultrawide. I know some games dont support it which is BS but its amazing for the vast majority of games. 4K is quite nice but its still very demanding. I also really am not a fan on the scaling of 4k.

If you can afford it go Ultrawide and GTX 1070. You will be able to run most games very nicely. I had an OC'd 980 Ti and had no issues with the games I play. However, some games will drop below 60fps. If you want a constant 60fps @ultra then you would need a 1080.

1070 might cut it on 60 Hz, but ain't the x34 a 100Hz screen? But it has Gsync, so will probably still be smooth, but you might not obtain full 100Hz at Ultra settings in games I think.

No. 3440x1440 is far less demanding than 4k. I get 50-60fps on most demanding games on a mix of Ultra-high. I play with my setting also.  The 1070 is on par with my 980 Ti so it would do well. It just would need an upgrade sooner than a 1080.

3440x1440=4,953,600

3820x2160(4k)=8,251,200

It is a 1.66x increase in Pixels for 4k compared to 1440p ultra-wide. Basically 3440x1440 has the same pixel density as a 27 inch monitor it is just Ultrawide.

On Ultra/High with low AA(not needed) in the Witcher 3 I get about 60fps and 45-55fps in the biggest cities. I just turn off hair works at that point and then get a pretty solid 60fps.

No. 3440x1440 is far less demanding than 4k. I get 50-60fps on most demanding games on a mix of Ultra-high. I play with my setting also.  The 1070 is on par with my 980 Ti so it would do well. It just would need an upgrade sooner than a 1080.

3440x1440=4,953,600

3820x2160(4k)=8,251,200

It is a 1.66x increase in Pixels for 4k compared to 1440p ultra-wide. Basically 3440x1440 has the same pixel density as a 27 inch monitor it is just Ultrawide.

Okay, I see. I assumed it was twice as wide as standard 1440p monitor :P

What do you think about buying two 980 Ti's today?

Thats up to you, but just don't buy Founders edition. Go aftermarket coolers is better performance/cooling/soundlvl's. EVGA, MSI and Asus have several good options but don't pin you choice on out of the box speeds. If you find one that you like the cooling performance is most important overall since that has most effect on how well it performs and uses the turbo...

So check reviews etc for that.

Why is the asus strix 1080 so expensive? I was considering that for my 1070. I think I will just see which gtx1080 I can find for under $700 that isn’t one of those lame blowers.

Ok so I am posting at work so I meant to place down that I HAD  a single 980 Ti with an Ultrawide monitor and it worked great. I just was typing and not really paying attention. So yes while I was quite happy with the 980 Ti and it did right by me I didnt go SLI because of DX12. DX12 is gonna slowly become the standard and the 900 series cards struggle with Aysmmetric rendering.

So if you are gonna go for a 3440x1440 monitor go for a 1070. If you can afford a 1080 then go for it! I love having dual 1080s as its basically overkill. Everything is on Ultra and maxed out. Even a single 1080 is glorious.

CPU: Ryzen R7 1800x (4.0GHz) | AIO: Master Liquid Pro 240 | MOBO:  MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM

                             SSD: Samsung Evo 250gb | HSSD: Seagate 2TB | Case: InWin 303 Black | PSU: Evga 210 1000w

Always avoid multi GPU if possible. Even if in theory it scales well it can still underperform. Just to depending on how well it is implemented.

Agreed about DX12, but don't pin yourself on that aswell. Allthough it will stay for while I would still look for what you overall play now.

No worries xD Thanks for the incite. My problem is that I could afford dual Titans, but I hate wasting money. I am mainly looking for ROI. Dual 1080s would be great, but I would want to shoot off one of my toes if I waste my money or invest it poorly.

Essentially, what I am gathering is that a 1070 would be fine and the 1080 would be better. At some point ROI goes down the shitter, so I am looking for a sweet spot. Same thing for the monitor, spending $1,300 on a monitor that will be outclassed in 6 months seems like a fools game, but that is the nature of technology so I am okay with it. But then in the same breathe maybe it would be better to just with the standard 16:9 1440p monitor for just over half the price.

I am looking for a sweet spot enmeshed with value. That is why I am building my own computer to begin with.
