Will this upgrade bottleneck?

Hi all and thanks in advance for reading this.

 

Recently my (almost) 4 year old Gigabyte HD7950 Windforce 3GB started crashing more and more often, which became more and more apparant in the Battlefield 1 beta. It crashed almost every playing session (of about 3 hours). 

I did some research on the card now and I saw a lot more people complaining about this problem. I tried some fixes, like updating and re-installing the drivers and unplugging and plugging the card back in again.

This did not work for me, and I don't have that much knowledge to fix this. So first, if anyone has a solution or a program where I can see log/crash log of why my PC crashed, I would love to hear it.

 

So, what I thought would be the easiest solution, is to buy a new GPU. As money people are, I am also doubting between the GTX1060 and the RX480, and maybe even the GTX1070... But my question is, will putting one of these cards inside of my system, create a bottleneck or will it just run fine?

 

My PC is as following:

CPU: i5 3450
Motherboard: AsRock B75 Pro3-M

(current) GPU: Gigabyte HD7950 Windforce 3GB
CPU cooler: Tranquillo Rev.2
2 SSD's: 128GB and 256GB
APU: XFX Pro 550W

Case: Be Quiet! Silent Base 600

 

I hope you can give me some more clarity on this subject, and thank you in advance.

1070 yes.

480/1060 depends heavily on the game. You'd easily get 60FPS at 1080p but you may not see it's full potential in games such as GTA V.

Forgot to mention, I am playing on 1080p and games like Battlefield 1 and Euro Truck Simulator 2, sometimes GTA V but it's not high priority.

Yeah GTX 1070 would bottleneck.

 

But for your build and the fact that you are playing at 1080p only, just get GTX 1060

It will be perfect GPU for you.

i5-3450 is fine for 60fps with either 1060 or 1070. 

 

In CPU intensive games u wont see full potential from 1070 but that doesnt mean u will get under 60fps. It is just not a good investment if u plan on keeping that CPU for couple more years and expect playing latest games at max settings.

Well, I think my CPU is still strong enough for me and my needs, so building a whole new system now for ~1000 euro's isn't necessary.

I plan on upgrading my GPU now, and in about 2 years or so (depends on how the CPU performes), I'll update my CPU and other necessary parts.

Or do you recommend updating/building a new system right now, and why are you recommending that?

If u buy 1060/480 u dont need to jump on new generation of CPUs. With 1070 u dont have to right now but there will be games in which u will notice that u dont get same fps as other ppl with higher clocked i5 or i7 CPUs. As far ad u are aware and dont need that absolute last single frame of performance just stick to your plan

 

Luke still games on his i7-2600K. 

 

U will gain more performance from just upgrading the gpu than u would from new build (the value would be lower because more money doesnt equal more (enough) performance).

Buy a 1070 if you aim for 1440p but at 1080p why not stick to RX 480?

6GB GTX 1060...doesn't depend on the game...run every games better except hitman and deus ex because they are gaming evolve titles...everything else the 1060 is better...also, especially when paired with a 3 generations old locked core i5 CPU (much less CPU overhead in the drivers with nvidia)

AMD reduced DX11 CPU overhead with their last driver, also why say those titles does not count? When Gameworks is much more biased, you could use the argument the GTX 1060 is better because more games uses Nvidia tech... o3o

Thank you guys for your great advice and confirmation on my choice!

I find this whole RX480 vs. GTX1060 discussion very interesting, and I still haven't fully decided on what brand I will choose, although I'm leaning strongly towards the GTX1060 atm.

I'll stick to my plan of only upgrading the GPU. Luckily I can wait a little bit longer, until the BF1 release, so I can (hopefully) see the prices drop a little bit
