Some questions about RAID

Yes, but the smallest drive would be the limiting factor. So if you had a 1TB and a 2TB drive in RAID, the most you could use is 1TB from each driver (Smallest drive limits you). Also, do note that you are bound by the slowest drive in the array, so using a WD Green or low RPM drive and mixing it with some 7200RPM drives or a SSD would slow the whole array down pretty bad.

Hi all,

I just have 2 quick questions about RAID so without further or do, here they are:

1. Can you RAID drives that are from different manufacturers?

2. Can you RAID with drives that have different storage capacities? Like one of them having 500GB and the other having 1TB

Thanks in advanced!

But in both cases: same drive is still always a better choice.

What would happen if I do number 2? Will I just be able to use the rest of the 1TB drive normally or is that included in the RAID (I have no clue how it would) Also thanks for your reply

Could you specify what raid you actually wanna run and why?

and with #2, you're limited to the smallest drive's storage size for the other

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 3960X | Motherboard: Intel DX79SR "Stormville" | RAM: 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 PC3-12800 (4x 8GB) Quad-Channel | GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB in SLI (I have Many other builds plus 100+ Macs (don't judge me)... Many specs are listed on my profile)

Also can you RAID a SSD and a hard drive? And I think that if it's possible as you said, it will only get the speed of the hard drive.

NVM you said that in your post
