Are you just gaming? Because if you are then you definitely don't need a 6700k, and if you don't need a 6700k then you don't need an aftermarket cooler.

EDIT: Get a better PSU, something with a better rating, preferably gold rated or above.

If you're prepared to drop that much on a CPU and GPU, don't cheap out on a power supply and get yourself a good one such as the EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2.

Do you also have some form of mass storage such as a 1TB HDD?

Games that are particularly CPU intensive (GTA V, Cities: Skylines, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Overwatch etc.) see benefits from i7s. If he can afford to spend the extra, there's no harm doing so because he'll see a boost in performance.

Build looks fine except for the PSU. Grab one from Tier 1 in the PSU Ranking :)

The Cryorig H7 isn't a great CPU Cooler, consider the bigger H5 Ultimate / Universal.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Your budget isn't enough to buy what you've listed. If you get used parts it can be in budget.

any advice about motherboards?

You don't need something that is more that $170 USD. An Asus Z170A or MSI Gaming 5 Z170 would be fine,

i5-8600K -  Asus Strix Z370E - Asus GTX 1060 Strix - EVGA 650W P2 - Samsung 970 Pro 500GB - G.Skill TridentZ 16GB

You're not getting a i7 6700K + GTX 1070 build for that amount of money...

Not Asus ones? xD

ASUS has pretty bad Customer service in the US but that might not be the case in Astreya

My personal favourite recommendation is the Asrock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4, but its black and orange aesthetic might not be for everyone.

You obviously can't get a pc with 6700k+z170 mobo+gtx 1070 in 1300 aud.

z170 mobo must be included, because other chipsets can't overclock K version CPU. So getting 6700k and a mobo that isn't z170 is total waste of money.

That doesn't make sense...

Here's a build that contains gtx 1070

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/2WGdHN

and here are only 6700k+z170+gtx 1070. Also, you have to buy cpu cooler too, because 6700k doesn't contain it.
