Hi.I currently have a 250gb 850 EVO in my system. Ive been adding to my steam library a lot lately and i think its time for another hard drive. I am either gonna get a 1tb WD Blue hard drive or a 2tb WD Blue. The 1tb spins at 7200rpm and the 2tb spins at 5400rpm. I would prefer the faster speeds, but if its only for games and large files then would it really be a big deal? I would definitely rather have 2tb, but i still want fast speeds. Which should i go for? Also, i saw a 2tb Seagate Constellation that spins at 7200rpm. Would that be a good option? Or should i stick with the WD?

Thanks!

P.S. The 1tb WD is cheapest, the Seagate is in the middle, and the 2tb WD is the most expensive.

Buy a 10k rpm HDD, much better.

Lol. I'm not rich first of all. Second, I need a good amounts of space for a steam library. I already have an SSD for Windows and everthing that I use on a daily basis so i dont need THAT much speed.

Why not get a 2TB hybrid drive from Seagate? Best of both worlds.

The speed doesn't cause a performance drop that is appreciable, but IF you need a faster drive I'd go with the Black series.

By the way HDD speed only affects loading times. Once the game is up files needed are dropped into VRAM and RAM.

Thanks for the responses guys!
If it only effects loading times, do i really need a 7200rpm drive in the first place?

You could get a WD enterprise drive, best of both worlds. Ive been using the RE4 for a couple of months, no complains here.

I would agree with you but since OP is looking for a mass storage drive and has a SSD, it doesn't make sense to spend an extra 20 or so on 8GB of SSD cache.

The HDD are fine. I'm referring to the Hybrid-series.

Wait a minute bro, an RPM based HDD with a huge capacity like that is gunna suck.

Am I right fellow LTT members?

HDD speed is determined by platter density, RPM, and controller.

Controller: 1TB 7200RPM Blue has lower read performance than 1TB 7200RPM Black due to the controller.

Density: 1TB single platter will read slower than a 2TB single platter due to density.

RPM: 5400RPM will allow the drive to grab more sequential data vs 7200RPM that needs multiple tracks to be read.

Total performance is a combination of these factors. Basing speed on RPM alone is erroneous.

If you're looking for a 2TB drive for gaming I'd go with a Blue for the better value. If you're using it for everything I'd go with the Black for the better controller.
