i5 or i7?

Hello guys,

I'm planning to build a gaming rig, however i don't know which CPU to use. Should I go for the i5 6600k or the i7 6700k? If I get the i5 6600k, I'll probably buy a GTX 1080 , while if I get the i7 I will probably purchase a GTX 1070. My only concern is the i5's lack of hyper threading, leaving it susceptible to some future games that might be CPU intensive and use more than 4 cores. So is the i7 6700k more "future-proof" than the i5 or not? Which "bundle" is more worth?

It depends on what exactly you will use it for?

To RGB, or not to RGB? That is the question.

I'd go i7 and GTX1070, and maybe add a second GTX1070 in SLI later if the games you're playing are optimized for SLI.

What resolution are you aiming for?

i5/1080 is better value (still terrible value because of the law of diminishing returns - much better to get a 1060/1070 and the i5)

Do you play at 60hz? 6600K and 1080.

Do you play at 144hz? 6700K and wait for 1080.

Its better than the i7 plus 1070, if you are thinking about games, period.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

Save your money and get a 1070 and i5 in that case. If you're getting a 1080, you better be taking advantage of the extra power and gaming at 1440p or higher.

There's no big issue with diminishing returns here. I think you're referring to the premium that a flagship like the 1080 comes with.

If you playing 1080p then a 1080 is essentially burning money. It's beyond overkill. A 1060 is cheaper, will still max out all new games at ultra and play 70+ fps. It will also run cooler if you get something like a strix from asus and will cost you significantly less money in the future due to its lower power draw. If you're not playing 1440p+ then You have no need for the 1080 or even 1070.

Well, 1080p is a great resolution and I guess not really that punishing for a computer, so I would like to know, based on your experience and knowledge, if the i5/1080 combo would last more than the i7/1070. The longer the PC plays games on medium/high/ulra settins the better for me.

Actually, I would like to play games on 1080p at maxed settings for a long time. No to mention that the i5/1080 is just 100 euros more expensive than the i7/1070.

I will probably stay with 1080p for a long time, since to me 1440p does not differ that much from 1080p. Also, as the time passes the 1080's price will be being reduced, so in the future I guess that SLIin a 1080 won't be that expensive.

My recommendation is actually to go lower end and put the money into a monitor. Once you go 100hz+ you never look back. 1440p is nice too.

Where I live 1440p monitors cost 300+ euros, and I don't want to give that much money for a monitor/

Won't the FPS drop while scaling the resolution from 1080p to 1440p?

Lower your settings a bit for 1440p. It'll still look better than 1080p.

Considering how much you are shelling out for the PC, 300+ euros isn't that much for what you're actually staring at all day.

Well, you're right, however I would like to spend 300 euros in something else. I dont really mind the 1080p's quality being worse than the 1440p's. As long as I play my games I'm fine, not to mention that I find the 1080p really good.

You dont buy it new. Set up a search that sends you emails. A very spesific one. So you can land a used screen. I did.. half the price. Pretty happy about it. G-sync 144hz and all that. If your picky you only get the stuff where the owner has the reseipt.
