I've heard that you can run Physx on the CPU if you have an AMD card. I am Building a system soon and AMD seems better for the price( I love nvidia but I can't afford a 780) how do you get physx to run on the CPU? And how hard of a hit does the CPU take.

It hits CPU very hard and it's not full PhysX - it's not advanced PhysX, that one can only run on Nvidia GPUs due to complexity of calculations. Too complex for CPU.

the basic physx performance hit depends on the game, for example in Borderlands 2 should be no problem to get it on and still max out the game at high FPS  :)

AFAIK you would have to dedicate 1 core for it, that'd mean you have only 3 cores available. It runs better on 4770K/FX83XX because 1 thread is completely enough for it and you have 7/8 of your CPU available instead of 3/4=6/8. Depending on the game it might or might not hurt your performance.

Don't think so mate. PhysX would run better on an Intel CPU. AMD FX series has one float point unit per module each of which perform worse than the Intel equivalence. CPU PhysX is based on FPU calculation.

On an 8core FX if you can turn PhysX down to medium or low (depending on the game) it shouldn't choke much at all. If you have to turn it off don't worry about it since you're not missing that much.

I've been on it for 3 years. Building a whole new system and exploring options.

Yes, but I based my statement purely on performance and cores, no additional stuff. 4770K is a best buy for CPU PhysX, since you have 87.5% of the original CPU and you can run PhysX better, the 4670K will have 75% performance and can run PhysX better, the 8-core AMDs will have 87.5% performance as well, but can't run PhysX as good as Intel CPUs. The 4930K will run good PhysX at 91.7% of the original performance.

Wolfur is incorrect here, you can run the highest quality setting for PhysX on the CPU, Advanced PhysX simply refers to GPGPU X87, regular PhysX is CPU x86 the effects are the same on both, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, however the rendering back-end is different.

You can run PhysX on your CPU + 7970 and get performance equal to having it run on a GTX 680.

I have a 4670K and Physx bottlenecks Hawken even though I have a great gpu. But it is still very playable imo (I think around 40-50FPS). You enable Physx by enabling Physx in the config file of the game or enabling it in game.
