Imagination who are well known for their powerVR Gpus are making MIPS cpu  now !

MIPS is a RISC cpu

its kinda like arm but more power efficient and from what i under stand has fewer instruction sets

it doesnt say this in the article but i bet the P5600 is using the proAptiv architecture

It will probably only be used in embedded devices, and maybe some rare phones (Android has been ported to MIPS) .

As for CPU manufacturers, if we are talking about x86 then we got 3 different ones. Intel, AMD and Via.

If we are talking about ARM then all architecture designs are originally from ARM, but a few companies like Qualcomm and Apple make modifications. Samsung manufactures the chips for Apple and their own Exynos range, but they actually don't make their own designs (Exynos octa uses stock A7 and A15 cores and the GPU is designed by ARM as well).

Samsung won't make x86 CPUs anytime soon, since they aren't even making (as in designing the cores) ARM CPUs yet.

just like what happened before

NO X86 License for YOU !

X86 is proprietary it belongs to intel

the press release says

The P5600 is ideal for SoCs targeting next-generation mobile phones and tablets, connected consumer products such as set-top boxes, DTVs and multiroom multi-channel audio systems, home and office networking and micro-servers.

it will have a hard time getting into the market but im sure it will first start fighting cheap arm chips like MTK and allwinner

mips already dominates allot of embbeded devices for an example

in the router segment around 90%+ routers use mips

but it seems brodacom's new arm design is winning the fight against high end 74k mips  even thought in terms of performance they are almost at the same footing

i believe imagination has a chance in getting into the mobile segment
