I hate to come to the forums to ask for help with something that you can clearly google..

But I've watched so many videos, and came across so many posts, but all information

is always half assed, and nobody really explains what I'm doing. They just throw general

settings your way and say stuff like "well you could have it like this or that, but that's up to

you". But then I'm thinking "Well okay, but wtf does that do? How do I know if I want it or 

on or not?"

I've attempted to overclock twice. Once, I was at 4.4ghz, and another time 4.2. But! Every

time I tamper with the settings, Cinebench OpenGL freezes my computer completely.

It doesn't blue screen, just that one thing freezes it. Gaming doesn't, rendering videos

doesn't either. But once I reset, it worked just fine. And both times (and this is why I reset

the overclock), after a couple days, it brings itself to 3.8ghz, and just stays there.Then when

it does that, what's weird is if I'm in game, the game will run slow-motion. Not a lot, but

noticeable. Not like FPS drops, the FPS stays the same as it would. But the literal pace of

the game runs maybe 5-10% slower, it's the weirdest thing. Then I figured it was the OC,

so I restarted my computer, and the bios says "overclock failed", and I go into the BIOS

and go to default settings, and it's fine again.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong.

So does anybody have any useful guides, because no matter where I look I can't seem

to find anything good.

My motherboard is M5A99X Evo 2.0, and my cooling is Corsair H60. My temps under

load are about 49c, so I know I have a bit of headroom. My motherboard supports up

to 140w too, if that's relevant.

I'd just really like to overclock because sometimes it really bottlenecks my 960. And any

extra juice I can squeeze out of it would be great.

Do it this way: Let's say you want to try 4,5gHz, disable all CPU power saving options as well as Turbo mode, clock it at 4,5gHz and add voltage, make it around 1,35V, if it boots then stresstest it while monitoring the temperatures, if it doesn't fail then you're good, if it does - increase voltage. If the temps are too high, reduce clockspeed, appropriately reduce voltage and try again, it may or may not boot, if it boots then run a stresstest like AIDA64. And repeat until you find a stable OC. That's pretty much it on AMD CPUs.

Alright, but there's also other settings people talk about. Like NB speed, load line calibration, setting your ram speed, etc.

And is 1.35v alright? People always suggest upwards of 1.4, but never passed 1.5. I can go back and raise it if needed,

but 1.35 is a good starting point?

Leave NB speed, set LLC to auto and leave your RAM at stock, overclock one thing at a time.

 

1.35 is actually pretty low, depending on how lucky you got with the chip the PC may or may not boot. If it doesn't boot, increase voltage by a little bit and try again until it boots, when it does, run a stresstest monitoring temps and see if you're happy with the OC thermally-wise.

Disable turbo, set speeds to turbo speed & slowly increase from turbo speed to above until you need more voltage. (then you quit or try to increase voltage)

And if the PC freezes during stresstesting, it means it needs more voltage.

Alright so I set it to turbo speed of 3.8 at 1.35v. Just ran Prime95 small FFTs for 20 minute, and these were my HWMonitor temps right before I stopped.

Everything look okay? It went to 1.38v too, didn't stay at 1.35. But when everything was default, it was hitting a little above 1.4 when at 3.8. So guess it's

a little better when I set it all manually anyway .-.

So bump the multiplier for 3.9ghz or 4ghz and stress again? 

EDIT: Update 

I went to 4ghz, left the voltage, ran prime again small ffts, and everything passed after 20 minutes.

Cinebench score was 464, and unlike when I tried to OC in the past, the OpenGL didn't freeze or crash. It ran fine at 3.8, as well as 4.0. I must've left some power save setting on before. But right now everything's stable. Gonna leave it for now at 4ghz and continue trying more tomorrow.
