Hey guys,

I, by no means am a computer whiz at all, hence the reason I’m here to consult you, “nerds” (respectfully said) for the best advice possible on building a computer.

I will be using this computer for: 3D rendering, motion graphics, character animation, video editing, etc.  I will be using programs such as: Cinema 4D Studio, After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop (basically all the programs you’ll find in Adobe Master Collection CS6).

This will be a big investment for me, so I’d like a computer that will allow me to use those programs with ease especially when working with 3D (without computer lags and crashes).  I’d like a fast computer with tons of memory.

Should I build a computer around the Intel i7-4960X Extreme Edition CPU and if so, what are the compatible components that will allow me to build this computer or is there another, cheaper route with comparable results that will allow me to accomplish the same without sacrificing my arm and stomach?

I keep hearing AMD parts are a lot less money and comparable to Intel, what’s your take on this?

As mentioned earlier, I am not a computer whiz, so please, be detailed and let me know all the parts I’ll need (cooling system, cpu, motherboard, graphic/video card, etc), pricey vs. cheapo components.

Thanks in advance, nerds!

well since your use case is professional application I would definitely go intel. AMD is generally the better bang for your buck when it comes to gaming/casual use. As for the 4960x it's definitely a good choice to go with socket 2011 for this rig but I think you'd be fine with a 4930k and that'll also save you some cash. When it comes to ram just get as much as you need from any reliable brand (kingston, corsair, crucial, mushkin etc.) For your video card I would go with an Nvidia quadro series card since you need precision and they are great professional cards. I'll plan out a build for you and post the link once I'm done.

                                                                                                                                                                | 5820k+EK supremacy nickel+acetal white 4.5Ghz | X99 Deluxe | Enthoo Luxe | 2x gtx780+komod NV full cover block | Corsair AX1200i | WD blue 500gb |

Not a video rendering sort of guy myself, from what ive researched (for a friend who is a adobe creative suite person) you can run it on anything, the reccommended specs are REALLY low to the point i don't get it :-S, that said I think its common knowledge that for such applications a strong cpu and gpu are beneficial.
something like an overclocked 8320 (£116) does very well for the price in this.
that said if i had the money i would find a second hand 3930k (you want that not a 3960x or the ivybridge equivilant) so long as its cheap.
you can get a REALLY good asus workstation board for £300 and a second hand 3930k in some places for £300 (give or take) and that will last a LONG time.

8320-4 modules, 8 threads

This belongs in the build planning section. Just FYI

i9 25.6 GHz with NeuronThreading, 256gb 6000 MHz RAM, GTX 990 OC 3024MHz 12gb, Skeletal X99 motherboard, 1 Petabyte SSD, Fractal Design Humaniod R1 Case, Herbivore 10,000W PSU, Noctua NF16 LP Derma Cooler.

Sense you won;t be gaming, you should STILL know that ivy-e (know what that means?) excels at only specific task, never the less it is a architecture for work benches.

To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

2k maybe a little more, but if i can stay under that, it would be great.   thanks for the quick reply.

what is your MAX budget. Quadros and a 2011 paltform cpu and motherboard will not be able to fit in that range.

Dude don't worry about where you place your topic. So allow me to get this straight.

Your scenario for your next Computer is specifically aimed at an Professional level (Adobe CS6) Video/3D/Photo Editing and rendering Etc.

What is your field of work? State your job?

Minimum budget of atleast 2K (what currency american dollar, english sterling etc?)

Please become a member of the Linus Tech Tips forum, keep writing smug remarks & let us love you. Peace out.

thanks for the quick reply and can't wait for the link.

alright here is something I quickly came up with. Do you think you can afford it? I kept the quadro and ditched 2011 cause I figured for 3d modelling etc. having precision graphics is more important that more cores. The 4770k still offers you hyper threading though so in terms of cpu I think you'll be fine. It's a few hundred over budget though. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1OSk2

PCpartpicker said it would use about 418w so I think 650w should be enough. If not then you can throw in a SeaSonic 760W 80 PLUS Platinum for $109.99 which in fact has a $60 off right now, $40 from IR and $20 MIR (it is normally $169.99)

oh alright then. I was just kinda guessing since I'm not to familiar with workstations so I just assumed X79 and a quadro card would draw quite a bit of power.

American dollars, i'm actually in the medical field and i'm doing this on the side, but it's something i'm starting to delve into a lot and would like to dedicate to this 100% of my time, hence the reason, i want a great computer.

thanks for the quick reply, what do you think about setting up RAID systems?

I put it in the same league as backing up your data, you should do it if you care about your data.

theres LOADS of guides here on the forum (use google not the poor excuse for a search that we have).

i have a raid 1 in my server because im using old ide drives, in my case it was very simple to set up a raid 1, for professional applications with a big investment you're looking at a raid 5 or raid 6 setup with multiple drives and a raid card.

If that sounds too expensive you have to decide wether to go for speed or safety (raid 0 or raid 1) , that can be done on just 2 drives. if speed is an issue you could potentially use an intel ssd (and people call me an amd fanboy HA!) for a cache (correct me if im wrong peeps) which will temporarily store your data before moving it to a permanent storage setup such as normal hard drives. the benefit of this is an ssd will have much faster read and writes compared to a hard drive alone.

Pick something you want to know about and find the biggest article you can and grab a cup of coffee, im no expert but tis taken me along time and lots of reading to get this far, thankfully linus has plenty of videos in techquicky, ncix tech tips and linustechtips on youtube to give you a quick introduction to get you started, remember to have fun doing what you love.

As long as the external drive has a USB 3.0 interface you should be fine

EDIT: I don't think that saving your work on a internal drive would affect performance if that is what you meant by that.
