Alright, I'm looking to upgrade my two 980s to a 1080, but I am running a 144hz 1080p monitor, and don't plan to do 4K within the next year or two, but I want to be able to achieve 100-120 fps in games, will I need to get two 1080s? I get pretty good fps with two gtx 980s, but it could be better.

Any idea when the 1080ti is going to be out? Are we even sure there will be one?

So let's speculate that the 1080ti is released, if I were to upgrade then and ditch the two 980s for a single 1080ti, I would most definitely see an increase then?

How often should you upgrade your graphics card?

Yes 1080 ti will increase in performance but we have no specs for a 1080ti. Keep 980's for a while

Alright sounds good, one last question is, how long will a graphics card last before dying? Will these 980s last another year or two?

The life span of a gpu depends largely on their environment and well, sheer luck. Any over clocked has a lower life span do to heat build up and such. With any electronics though, a time line can never truly be counted on as anything can happen.

As for upgrading the sli 980 setup is pretty decent over all. I think you would have an ok increase, but not worth the money you would spend.

Your question about when should you upgrade. Well that depends on you and your goals. You should upgrade when ever it suits you and your budget.

1 1080 should be around 0-7% faster than 980 SLI.

Can be even more in cases, where 4gb Vram isn't enough.

However.. 1080 sli for 1080p? that's ridiculous ^^

Keep your 980s, and upgrade to a 1080 ti if you "need" to.

But keep in mind. a Titan X pascal is NOT able to utalize it's whole perforance in a laughable 1080p Resolution. it's just SLIGHTLY faster than a 1080.

However, in 2160p, the Titan X runs away.

The 1080p resolution itself would bottleneck a Titan X (pascal) / 1080 ti.

But i suggest, if you need more fps, to just put 1-2 settings one level down? I don*'t see the problem here. ^^

What CPU do you have? If it's an i5, there you have it. i7 can hold 120-144 fps better than an i5. Up to 60 fps it doesn't matter much, but holding 144 fps... it's not easy. Even for an overclocked i5.

CPU is definitely not the bottleneck as I have an i7 6950x. Not only do I game but I also do video editing and 3D rendering, but am not ready to jump into Xeon processors and quadro cards.

I'm thinking I'm going to go for a 1080ti and if that isn't enough go for 2 of em.

I just wish we knew more about it, like, if it's even going to exist, and when it will be released.

You won't need to upgrade, two 980's is overkill for those games at 1080p and a gtx 1080 wouldn't be worth it at all

And when they die I definitely will need to upgrade. I'm just scanning the market to see what is available and figuring out what I will need. I do plan to play new games, just haven't decided what ones yet. and really, two 980s is not overkill for borderlands series, as physx takes a massive chunk out of the framerate.
