I currently have 1 Asus HD 7970 DCUii (triple slot card) if I was to get another down the road (which would be another triple slot card) would that make the cards run hotter due to the fact that they would be sandwiched together? Would the card on top run hotter than the card on bottom?

yes, only by a few degrees(2-5) in most cases.

very insignificant

make sure your case has good airflow

Just put your hand on the backplate during some heavy gaming.

Feel that? All that air is being used to cool your card if you xfire.

It will be hell for you top card

I think it is the other way around... That the card on the bottom would run hotter then the card on the top since the top card is blowing hot air on the one below...

But maybe I am wrong :) I would though not recommend getting triple slot cards since you have the issue of them being sandwiched together which is kind of bad for temps...

Then maybe I could look around for a good dual slot 7970 to help with airflow?

Like already said, but if you use same cooling as you use in your profile picture, your temps wont rice. :)

I ran 2x GTX 680 direct cu ii top cards in a system for over a year (also triple slot cards, very similar to yours) and I had no heat problems whatsoever. Just make sure you have some decent airflow in your case and you'll be set.

Were they overclocked?

They came with a pretty ridiculous factory overclock 1200mhz - 1300mhz. I didn't overclock them any further myself.

When I had my soundcard between my GPU's my primary GPU(listed in signature) ran 7-10 degree's hotter than my secondary GPU, this was because the soundcard was only a few mm away from the GPU. I imagine that you will run into a similar situation with a pair of triple slot cards as they will be very close to each other. At the time when my rig was configured that way I had the best possible airflow that is capable in my case minus having two fans on the side panel. You should keep this in mind if you buy and overclock a pair of 3 slot GPU's, my temps still never got to 70c but one ran hotter nonetheless.

I already have 1 fan on the side panel (no room for 2 fans :( ) So I sure hope that it will stay cool. Although I might just look around for a dual slot 7970 like a Sapphire and see if those to play nice together :P

My current 7970 has 1125/1575 (I would try to push further but MSI afterburner won't let me :(

The extra heat generated might be anywhere from 3 degrees (doesnt matter) to 10 degrees (may start to matter), it really depends on the coolers used.

depending on what your system looks like id probably get another 7970 but dual slot and put it in the top slot, have a 1 slot gap between it and your current card which would go in the next x16/x8 slot, so long as you have a side 120mm intake or a decent (high flow) front fan you'll be okay. got a picture (side on, panel off)???

edit:don't get sapphire, you have a beautiful card with the asus and im guessing a beautiful rig, dont ruin it with an off-turquise PCB that sapphire likes to use...

As long as there is at least the width of one slot between the primary and secondary GPU's you should be fine. The top one might still run a bot hotter but it shouldn't be an issue.
