GPU upgrade

haariger_wookie

Greetings from Germany,

I finally got some Money to upgrade my GPU. (currently using HD7970 at 1070MHz but its terribly loud and hot (82°C with at least 2600rpm in Sommer))

So my Budget is about 400€ and found 3 GPUs that would fit in:

Asus Gtx980ti Matrix

EVGA gtx 980ti Hybrid

KFA2 gtx 1070 ex

They all cost 399€ and i have 2 Questions:

Would my I7 2600k bottleneck any of these GPUs?

more important (since i plan to upgrade my CPU in future anyway):

Which should i take?

I know the 1070 has slightly more Power, but is the KFA2 card a good choice? it is the cheapest one on the marked the other models cost between 430 and 530€. Will it work fine for the next years or is the evga 980ti a better more futureproof choice?

I apologize for bad english,

wookie

For gpu choices I would go with the KFA2 GTX 1070, I looked at it and it looks like a beafy cooler.

And cpu bottlenecks aren't an issue I think, have you overclocked it though?

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

I would go with the 1070 as well. It already outperforms the others as you mentioned, but it will also continue to get better as drivers mature. Also, you get a nice increase in VRAM which will help going forward.

EDITED: Initially posted "double the VRAM", but I was thinking of the 980 rather than 980 ti.

It totally depends on what resolution you play your games, if you only play on 1080p i would chose the 980 or 980ti, because the 1070 is overkill only for 1080p gaming.

Hope you can use this :)

I actually dont know how many cuda cores i need. Until know i always simply bought the strongest card in real game benchmarks i can afford.

I already knew that the 1070 outperforms the 980ti, most notably in dx12.

I just saw that my question was a bit misleading. I wanted to know if the very cheap kfa2 card would be a good futureproof choice. Sorry for that!

At the moment i only use 1080p since my GPU (hd7970) isnt really able to go 1440p on max settings. If i get a gpu capable of 1440p i would definitly change that and buy a new Monitor in the near future

ok thx

If the cooler seems good i will give it a try.

Probably gonna share some framerates when i got it.

My cpu is overclocked to 3,9 Ghz under air cooling. If i go higher the cooler gets pretty noisy. I already ordered a new cooler so it will run quiter with probably higher clockspeeds.

Thanks to all the help!

I vote for the 1070, but honestly the performance difference is not huge compared to 980 ti.  If you find a really great deal, the 980 ti is a good choice.  Both are great.

Your CPU is still pretty good, but it might bottleneck in some circumstances.  For example, if you are running at very high FPS on a high refresh rate monitor, your CPU will bottleneck.  But for gaming at 60fps, you won't have any issues.

Go for the 1070. It has more RAM and it is more power efficient.

This, Power efficiency means cool running.
