I recently ran into a power problem and ordered a Corsair RM1000x. Is a 1000 watt overkill? If so I'd be fine with returning it and buying something smaller/cheaper. Right now my 750 just isnt cutting it (or at least thats what I think the problem is)

Rig

8350 @ 4.8GHz

Gigabyte 990fx

2x MSI GTX 970 OC

Cooling
1x Kraken 41x

1x Kraken 40x + G10**

1x Kraken 31x + G10**

*After adding the 2 Kraken+G10 combos is when only one of my cards would boot at a time and intermittent USB peripheral problems started

Overclock softly, and carry a big radiator......

Im using a NZXT Hale90 750W and the issue is only one card will work at a  time the other gets turned off by windows for reporting problems. Also randomly 1 to all of my USB ports shut off and I need to restart.

I recently added 1 Kraken x40 + G10 and 1 Kraken x31 + G10, it was working fine for about 5 minutes then my pc crashed and did an error check. On startup 1 pump repeatedly failed and when I finally got it up and running the second card would only work if it was the only plugged in.

The Hale 90 isn't a completely awful PSU and should do dual 970s just fine. I'd RMA the part to NZXT if it's under warranty. Otherwise the 1000RMx is way overkill (could power about 5 non-overclocked 970s without a hitch) and will last a long, long time.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Well, if you can afford it, why not? For example, I have a SilverStone OP1000 which I'd gotten back in 2009, peeps were saying it was overkill even then, but my philosophy is, if you can afford it and want the best (that you can afford), just do it! I still have it on active duty, powering FX8350/16GB RAM/2x HD7950 rig without issue. Over time, as capacitors age, the unit becomes less efficient and doesn't perform optimally, but due to its extra 'oomph' it can still handle a power hungry rig like my FX rig.

In fact, all four main rigs I have are powered by 1000W PSU or higher.....OP1000, HX1050, Seasonic X-1250 and Enermax REVO 1500W. All these PSU's have been well reviewed or received IIRC (I know both the OP1000 and REVO 1500W have gotten pretty good score from jonnyguru)

Your system would be fine on a 550W PSU. If your power supply was giving problems, it was faulty or low quality.

You can get a pretty great 550 Watter for about $70

Thanks for the info about 750 being fine everyone. Just discovered it wasnt a power issue, the Kraken I installed was saying that the pump was on and running but it wasnt. Overheated my card and now its limping and only able to function above 800x600 in safe mode.
