Yes, use truecrypt.

If i need to encrypt large amounts of data i use 7zip to pack it into a password protected archive.

 

TrueCrypt is best if the data needs accessed often, but otherwise id stick with archiving it

I personally prefer using Bitlocker thats available on Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro and is probably one of the easiest to use encryption tools out there. Since I normally work in a Windows environment, it integrates really well with everything.

 

If you don't have either of the OSs and want to give TrueCrypt a go, Linus made a video a while back which I think may be useful to you. I hope this helps!
