Hey guys,

Soon I will be moving in with 3 others for school related reasons. The person that is renting us the place says our internet speed is 50mb/s. We are all in separate rooms, and in my case the router is not really close to me. Are there ways to speed up the internet if this might be necessary? Like antennas, extenders etc? And do these actually help. I know if some one is downloading, I can't help it.

Anyone got some solutions?

Thanks,

Reece

Uncontested only if others are not utilizing all of the internet bandwidth.

You should see if there's any kind of load balancing/QoS implemented in case someone decides that it's a nice idea to download TBs of crap 24/7.

Moreover another concern would be security. If you are all going to be piped through the same router/switch and there's no separate VLANs then you are all going to be in the same LAN effectively. This essentially means that each of you has the potential to be able to see and manipulate each other's packets/traffic and even devices.

It sounds like a trainwreck.

Would you maybe know a way for me and my friends to like play games with the best possible internet whilst the router is being shared with others and is not in my room?

By checking that the technologies that I have mentioned have been implemented and configured correctly. QoS/load balancing will give you each a dynamic percentage of the total bandwidth thus ensuring that no one single person can fully saturate it and separate VLANs will keep traffic isolated.
