You should clip it to case or psu, but I've built pc without it, and it is performing well.

when we get new servers at the place i work (datacenter) they usually arrive with the network cards in the wrong slots, so we need to swap them.

it usually happens on carpet, with no antistatic protection, and we have yet to have one fail.

Yeah, I have one too and I use it about half the time because it's in the way and keep coming unclipped from the case. I figure building on a table and standing on a hardwood floor is safe enough. If the static cling in my tshirt is strong enough to fry a computer, I should join the X-men. I've never fried a computer due to static electricity lol.

in over 10+ y of fiddling with computers and 7 of those spent building them professionally, I never used a wrist strap or any other form of grounding myself - zero hardware killed

i'll totally use one when working on one of the 64x 10Gbps cisco switches, but if you're not an idiot or dont live in the desert its okay.

anyways, here's the trick i'd use:

- get one of those extension cords with a switch (preferably two pole switch), plug it in and turn the switch off

- turn off the button on the back of the power supply

- put the power supply in the case (both the case and PSU are made to be touched - hence made to withstand static)

- plug the power supply in the extension cord, all of which with grounded outlets

- clip the strap to the mesh on the back of the psu, or one of the screws that hold it in. (bare metal)
