So I wanted to build a PC for a Minecraft (modded) server.

But the machine freezes after a while, and sometimes do some weird screen thing(images below), and making the server completely unusable.

I have managed to download and install Teamviewer, but im pretty much unable to download much else before it gets all weird.

The build is:

I7-2600

Random Nvidia GPU (just for displaying the GUI on Ubuntu, as well as minor non-GPU demanding programs)

2x2GB Ram

500GB HDD

Generic Motherboard

Ubuntu Version 14.02LTS (although it happened too on 16.02 that I used first)

And another time:

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have absolutely no idea why this happens. I have had the same with my PC on ubuntu 14.04, but not on 16.04. On 16.04 however, I can't get 1080p to work...

Easiest solution, use the iGPU of the i7-2600.

Second easiest solution, buy an AMD GPU, they seem to work easier for me at least.

Hardest solution, try different Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros (Linux Mint, Elementary OS, etc) until you find one that works, and probably spend hours getting the drivers to work.

Problem is, the Motherboard doesn't have output for the iGPU...that's why I had to get a Dedicated GPU, which I tested to work fine in my tower.

I might try using other Distros, but I thought Ubuntu was supposed to be the one with the best compatability.

14.02 and 16.02?

Are those even real versions? Use XX.04 releases.

Sorry, my bad, I tried 14.0and 16.04

Thanks for pointing that out.

Are you gonna need the video output after the install?

You could just do the install on another computer, set everything you need to launch on boot, then put the drive in the server.

Here's a link you might find useful http://askubuntu.com/questions/760934/graphics-issues-after-installing-ubuntu-16-04-with-nvidia-graphics

Should be applicable to 14.04 as well. Ctrl+alt+F1 enters the non-graphical terminal which shouldn't be glitching out and you can try getting different drivers.

Did you per chance leave the 'install non-free components' checkbox unchecked when installing? Nvidia's proprietary driver probably supports more functionality than the open source one.

Also, I'd say that the glitches are caused by the DE ( Unity) asking the driver to do things it doesn't support, so using a distro with a different DE should help too. Lubuntu/Xubuntu/Mint all differ from Ubuntu in just that aspect.
