Would Asus KCMA-D8 + Opteron 4180 be suitable for a Home Nas build? I found a deal which will cost me 40USD used, but i couldn't find any information regarding the performance of the Opteron online except that maybe its a 6-core server Processor. Would a Intel core 2 duo E8400 be a better choice for the same price? Or the processor would be better off for other uses

What would the NAS be for anyways?

You can usually set up a 'server' on basically anything.  The question is whether or not the energy efficiency is good enough, and has the ports you need.

To just share files, and provide shares for backup you really don't need much of a machine.
