Hi!

Over the last two years I get random BSODs with different error messages. What usually happens when a bluescreen occurs is that the sound makes a very static noise until the pc turns off.

The most common error messages: Driver_Overann_Stack_Buffer, Memory_Management

OS: Windows 10

CPU: FX6100

GPU: R9 280X

RAM: 8gb DDR3

PSU: 750W

My issue is that this seems very random and I can't find any correlation anywhere. They can happen from 3 times a day or 0. A few times a week or none at all. They don't happen when I use noticable programs. For instance I recall bsods when I use chrome, microsoft word, sony vegas and games.

They never happened before I replaced my gt 210 with the 280x in april 2014. After a few months of working fine these BSODs keep happening randomly up until this day. This is the only thing I can think of as a possible cause of the problem.

I need help, I'm not familiar with troubleshooting what's wrong with my pc. This issue isn't too major as it doesn't disturb me that much but can sometimes become a bit anticlimatic when I'm watching a youtube vid and boom bsod.

From what you've described it sounds like it could potentially be a driver issue with the gpu causing instability. I'm not hugely sure what to advise though reinstalling drivers might be a good start if you haven't tried that. Try taking out your GPU and seeing if that resolves the issue or swap out any parts you can to try and diagnose the fault.

I've reinstalled drivers many times.

Try to download Display Driver Uninstaller and boot into safe mode running the program as administrator.

This program will clean out any files which might be left after removing drivers.

P.S. Download version 17.0.1.0 at the bottom.

How do I boot into safe mode?
Simultaneously press on the Windows + R keys on your keyboard, then in the run window type “msconfig” and press “OK”.
Switch to the “Boot” tab and in the “Boot options” select the “Safe Boot” option and click “OK”
You will need to reboot your device in order for the setting to take effect, if you have work to do/save you can select “Exit without restart” if not, you can restart now and your device will boot into safe mode.

QUICK EDIT

You need to disable "Safe Boot" in msconfig to start windows normally! This can be done the way described above or by right clicking on the windows icon (windows 10) and click on run.

You can also search for run and search msconfig from there.

Try this out and install your drivers again afterwards, if that did not solve it we can try troubleshooting, it's about eliminating the causes :)

Hi!

So as I said I used DDU yesterday, installed latets drivers. A little over 24 hours later (2 min ago) I just got my first BSOD and it said Driver_overann_Stack_buffer. I did yesterday windows memory diagnostic and didnt get any issues with my ram. i am more and more suspecting somethings up with the gpu.

It's could be your graphics card, but it could also be your PSU.  I say PSU because it can cause a lot of things in the PC to fail, and the additional power draw from the GPU could be causing it to fail.

Do you know the actual model PSU you have?  Not just the wattage?  A lower end one doesn't necessarily indicate it being the cause of failure, but it may be worth replacing first if it possibly saves you a GPU and your entire system for that matter.

That's true. I replaced the psu at the same time I replaced the gpu. But I do not know for sure. It is a CX750M

Not a terrible PSU, but the old CX's aren't super reliable either.

If you replaced both at the same time, and your issue started around that time, then yeah, it could be either one.  You could also try reinstalling Windows just to thoroughly eliminate software as a possible issue, but it honestly sounds like it's hardware.

I would throw in the 210, or any other spare GPU if you have it, and see if it still crashes with the PSU - I recommend trying to borrow a better card that will actually challenge the PSU.  Whatever is easier/cheaper for you to eliminate first.

Hey @Aceface try running a stress test on your GPU and keep some monitoring software open to check temperatures and voltage.

I can recommend Unigine Heaven Benchmark, you can use MSI Afterbooster to monitor your GPU (It works with AMD too)

It does require a bit of tweaking to show what you want, try to experiment with it if not just write in here and we can figure out something :)

Basically instead of starting the actual benchmark, just let it run for a few hours and see if you get any BSOD at all.

Also, before doing this I'd recommend you to install WhoCrashed - Comprehensible Crash Dump Analyzer, gives you all the data you need when it does BSOD, error etc.

If this does not work, try to find a way to either use a friends GPU to see if that is working or try to troubleshoot the PSU.
