So I had a 1TB WD Black witch had great speed but was a little bit too noisy, Now Im getting a 2TB one, I have 2 ssd in raid 0 for boot, so I use the RAID controller, and I will probably use a 64GB ssd as cache for the new hdd.

I have 2 questions, is the read much slower than the black, and is the atatached image accurate, is the red really that silent?

I have two reds in raid 0 and I don't feel like they are any more noisy/silent than my green.

Both are 5400rpm afaik and black is probably 7200rpm so it's a little louder but also faster. Reds are NAS drives ment for 24/7 operation and stability.

Compared to WD black drives, pretty much any drive from this decade that's not totally fubar by fragmentation will be surprisingly silent. Blacks still make that annoying nineties' rattling noise. Right? It's not the hum of the drive or even resonance. It's the head hitting the sides.

Hmm... If annoying noise= speed, my godson might be speedy gonzales...

Anyway, the graph looks accurate to me. Also, look into Scythe Himuro. It's originally intended for cooling, but it does a great job at silencing HDDs too. There are other enclosures like it, but in my experience you really want something chunky like the Himuro.

Hi there :)

You can check out the spec sheets of WD Red and WD Black and see the noise levels and performance of each model depending on the capacity.

Noises from HDDs typically don't come directly from them but from the vibrations that they produce and cause other parts such as cables, cases, screws, etc. to vibrate and produce excessive noise. I would recommend checking if your drive is firmly and properly places inside your case and that no other part is touching it.

Let me know if you need additional information regarding these two drives. :)
