So after deciding from my other post that I probably on don't want to go down the separate headphones and microphone route, at least for now. I am now on the hunt for headsets. I have heard many good things about the Hyper X Cloud 2 but is it really the best headset? I know it's certainly one of the most expensive but are there any betters ones that people are using? Perhaps someone that has used the Cloud 2 before as well as other headsets and can give me a comparison?

Here's the one i'm looking at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperX-Cloud-Gaming-Headset-Mobile/dp/B00SAYCXWG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472147951&sr=8-1&keywords=cloud+2

The HyperX Cloud 1's are basically the same (aesthetic difference, mic isn't detachable, and no virtual surround) but only 50.

But why didnt you want to go down the separate headphone/mic route?

Why not look at the original Cloud or Cloud Core?

Why, because of the price?

Well, it's for my birthday so price doesn't matter as long as the cloud 2 isn't worse?

They're not worse, but they're not really any better either.

No, I have a pair of 990s + a Mod Mic, but based on all the reviews from professionals and members I've read the Cloud 2s really don't sound any better.

Ah yeah. DT990?. I'm so indecisive I think maybe I might go separate headphones and mic. Have you ever tried the m50x's or any other headphones and how are they compared to the DT990's? What DT990's do you have, what Ohms?

From what I've heard (note: I haven't used them personally) the M50x are fair at best -- they sound fine, but they're expensive for what they are -- the M40x are a much better value with a very similar sound.

Generally, I've seen people recommend the DT770 over the M50x's as they supposedly sound much better. The 990s are open headphones, so they will sound very different from the 770s/M50x/M40x. I really like the sound of my 990s though. They're the 250ohm variant, but that really doesn't matter very much. I have no issues driving them off of my iPhone, my Mac, my SP3, my Z97s SLI Plus, or my Z87m Gaming.

The separate mic/headphone route will definitely give you better sound and mic quality, and it gives you the option to use them as regular headphones without dealing with a mic (although the latter is possible with the Cloud 2s too). But at the same time, a headset is nice since it uses just one wire (and likely is a bit cheaper)....so

I see, I just had someone comment about that on the another thread saying m50x's are overpriced so maybe there not for me. Yeh, i see what you are saying. What is the difference between open and closed and will open really be better for me ? When you say they sound different is that a good different? Ok, so if I get the 250 variant of DT 990's I shouldn't need a DAC/amp then. True but since this is for my birthday I can't have both headset and headphones but I want better audio quality so I guess getting separate headphones and just slapping a mod mic on the side should do it.

Open means that the backs of the headphones is open -- so open headphones have a much more open soundstage (i.e. it sounds more like a pair of speakers in a room rather than speakers pressed up against your ears). I prefer open headphones, but they're not very good if you're in a loud environment as you will hear EVERYTHING that's going on around you. And they're not great for use on an airplane as, in addition to no isolation for you, the people around you can hear what you're listening to as well. Generally closed headphones have (the potential) for more bass -- the 770s are a bit more bass heavy than the 990s iirc. The 880s are kind of a cross between the two.

No, you shouldn't need a DAC or an AMP (I would recommend getting the pro variant rather than the premium variant as the pro variant is cheaper and the only difference is aesthetics). The one complaint I have about the 990 is the wire....I really dislike the heavy and long coiled cable -- I much prefer a straight cable, and the only way to replace the cable is to mod it (which I'm not ready to do yet).

Ohh ok. I think I would prefer open. My desk is in the living room the only other sound in this room is the tv and my parents talking (on my right side) which is not very loud (the tv) and on my left, there is nothing (just a wall). Ok, the pro variant is the one I'm looking at thanks for telling me about the variants I wouldn't spend more money on looks. Well say I choose and get the DT 990s then I will probably use a cable drop so the wire isn't as heavy.
