Ethernet Wall Adapter Help

My current PC has a standard ethernet adapter that plugs into the wall and gets noticeably slower speeds that my brothers Xbox. His xbox is plugged directly into the router while mine is on the other side of the room. He gets upwards of 8mbps whereas i get 2mbps tops. The house we are in is an older house so that may have something to do with it. I want to know if a better adapter or other solution would be better.
