My dad is flying to the US this week and he wants to buy a new work related laptop, I had a hard time trying to talk my dad into going for the Lenovo p50 instead of the other weaker slim models, he wants to go for this Asus which has an i7, lots of HDD , SSD and a 4k monitor, it doesnt look bad but the p50's Xeon is better so i managed to convince him otherwise, I went it to the page to choose the model parts but i have a doubt about the various SSD options, specially if I should pick NVME, plus there are plenty of different parts to choose from for the laptop, including how much RAM, touch or non touch screen, 1080p or 4k, etc, . please help me pick the best parts for him

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/cart.workflow:ShowCart2

Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.70GHz)

Language Pack: Publication - English
Warranty: 1 Year Depot or Carry-in
Pointing device: ThinkPad Laser Bluetooth Mouse

So far thats about 2100 USD, its just above his budget so he is willing to spend it, i told him that its better to get an external drive instead of the 500gb HDD included in the page. like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/291842292217

Another important thing to consider is that in my country we use 220v power outlets, so is that going to be an issue if he tries to charge the laptpop using a 110AC watt adapter? I hope the adapter works on 220v

I also had the option to add this:
Integrated Mobile Broadband: Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A (Sierra Wireless EM7455)
but i dont know whats it for, maybe he doesnt even need it, i think the Wireless is enough to go online, is it really necessary?

Thanks in advance

I recommend this instead.

I have this model, and its the best laptop ive ever used (for general purpose use with light gaming), and ive owned the Blade 2014 Edition

I would recommend getting the 512GB PCI-e NVMe SDD.

I have the SATA one, but NVMe is better

Great laptop choice. Before you purchase. What is your dad doing with that laptop? It's a tier-1 workstation, but does he really need it? or just a regular business laptop?

If your dad does need a quadro card for highly specified applications usages, then I would say the following changes to that setup (it's pretty damn good already):

Change the CPU to i7-6820HQ: I see you aren't using any ECC ram or professional Windows so you can't take advatnage of the Xeon anyway. Save money and reallocate it elsewhere

Get the 3k non-touch display: the workstation is big enough that it's not really comfortable to use touch, and the 3k screen offers so much more real estate on the screen to work with

Change the storage: Do you need NVME? Unless you're moving LARGE amounts of files to and from the system consistently there is no point in grabbing one. Sata3 is sufficent. Grab the 512 SATA3 ssd. If you need more storage grab the 1tb ssd.

Everything else is good.

Keep him away from the Asus.

If he does need the quadro then do what Pendragon said, if he doesn't get a T460s, it is the top of the top, when we talk normal business class laptops and I think by now everyone knows how insane ThinkPads are build and how good the keyboard are on them.

Ok, he is not using CAD or too many graphic demanding apps, he just wants the top of the line to work as fast as possible, specially when having lots of windows open, big excel files and moving stuff around , and he also need a lot of storage. Are SSD Nvme really necessary?
In my country's forum they told me Lenovo has worse support here than Dell, so that could be a bonus in favor to Dell, i dont really think my dad needs a Xeon , much less a very high power GPU like the Quadro, but i cant choose another GPU on the customize page.
How much downgrade would there be if goes for a Dell like Latitude 7000 or something similar? Ive read the new XPS is bullshit compared to last model,  the good thing about the Lenovo p50 its the battery life and the solid build, if it were to fall it would resist more than the dells. Considering this what do you think is best suited for him?

How big are the excel files. Because there's a difference. If you're only managing a couple hundred lines, a ULV will be fine. If you manage a couple million lines all with functions and macros stacked thoughout, or using slightly advanced things like using vlookup to scan through a million lines or so, you'll want a quad core.

If it's not alot, Lenovo T460s or Dell E7470 is the top of the line for work. Get it. It's great.

If it's alot, you have some more options here, if he wants small, get the T460p is good. Has a light dGPU in case there's some workloads that requires CUDA acceleration. Another excellent choice is E5470 (i7-6820HQ), is great for working on millions of computations at once.

What you have selected is pretty good too, but the E5570 is alot heavier and bigger than the E5470 due to the need to stuff a dGPU in there. Does he need a numberpad? That changes everything.

You don't need the P50.

Ok im back, he is not using huge excel files but he needs to process work as fast as possible when using these files and browsing. He also wants a 15inch screen monitor, not less or more, and that T460 is 14'', the dell E7470 also has a small screen so that rules these one out, he doesnt need a numpad. The only good option you mentioned for him is E5570, cuz its 15 inch
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e5570-laptop/pd?oc=cto04ue557015us&model_id=latitude-e5570-laptop

it starts at 1000 bucks soill try to find it in the Dell outlet.
Why do you think he doesnt need a p50? i think thats a solid choice cuz its powerful, has long battery and doesnt break easy when moving around, only con it has would be the weight. Ive found some good options in Lenovo's outlet, starting at $1000, with these specs:

Not really , he doesnt really need a graphics card, apart from viewing online TV there shouldnt be a need for a professional GPU. They recommended me this laptop too, is a bit expensive considering what it has, dont you agree? https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-Business-i7-6700T-Professional-SuperMulti/dp/B01C2N285M/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1472185322&sr=1-1&keywords=n350dw

I think for a 1000, what the OP has picked up on the P50 is quite good. Albeit a bit big and heavy.

true, but the P50 has a quadro and if his dad is not going to use it then it is a not stupid to pay for it IMO. The P50 is a really nice laptop and I am sure that his dad would love it, but he also pays for the quadro.
