Hey there,

We have a secondary PC at home that my mother uses, however recently it became extremely slow. It was pretty fine until now, you have to wait a few minutes between every task. Sometimes the screen also turns black with just a small blue rectangle at the top left corner. Now after a hour I didn't manage to do anything on the PC. I am planning to do a fresh Win install, if that won't help, what could be causing the issue? I am suspecting the HDD. This system isnt new, it has almost 5 years now. Also do you think it's worth it just buying new stuff to the old crap, or just get a new PC? It is loud and inefficient.

Here are the specs:

AMD Athlon64 II X2 5600+

MSI AM2 Neo board

HD4350

3GB RAM

WD Blue 320GB

generic 400W PSU

The new PC would be:

AMD A4-5300

Corsair 2x2GB RAM kit

MSI FM2-A75IA-E53

Adata Premier Pro 64GB

Seagate Barracuda 500GB

Fractal Design Node 304

Enermax Thriathlor 300W

My rig: CPU: Intel core i5 4670K MoBo: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 2x4GB 1600mhz CL9 GPU: EVGA GTX780 SC ACX SSD: ADATA Premier Pro SP900 256GBHDD: Western Digital RED 2TB PSU: FSP Aurum CM 750W Case: Cooler Master HAF XM OS: Windows 8 Pro

Go with a new build and hock the old one for parts on your regional equivalent to Craigslist.

Well you can build a new PC or just, throw in an SSD into the old one and it will become extremely fast and snappy. Then buy a quiet fan or two if it's loud or some aftermarket heatsink.

And since you're going to use an SSD in the new build anyway if you decide that after upgrading the old machine with an SSD it's still not fast enough, you can still make the new build, and you already have an SSD for it... But my guess is that a fresh install of Windows on an SSD is all that's needed.

It's loud because of the GPU fan, before it was bearable but when I threw it in it was loud as a grass mower. Also I don't want to upgrade a 5 years old PC because other parts are also likely to fail.
