So i need a power block (one of these things)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-E--Plug-SurgeStrip-White/dp/B0002AG0F2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1471895037&sr=8-7&keywords=belkin+surge+protector

for my PC but as i was going to buy it i noticed it said

  • Features a 238 J energy rating

Now i don't know what that means in Watts but i assume J is the same as W (physicists please correct me if im wrong) so my question is if i have a 550W PSU will this power block manage to draw that amount of power safely?

As W (Watt) is J/s (Energy(=Joule) per second) a 550W PSU will draw 550 J/s when under max load, so my guess is no.

[Edit] After some googling around, it probably refers to the surge protection. The rating then means that if you have a surge of up to 238 J it will protect your device(s). Normal operation with that PSU should probably be fine. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though :D

As mentioned that would be the surge rating, you want a high rating so it can absorb power surges to protect your equipment from sudden large flucations in power, that unit while it would work is fairly basic something a little more substantial:
