buck for bang 1070 or 1080?

Cereality

Hey I am buy a beast pc in the range of $2000. The build was 1,851.35 US Dollars ( including the gtx 1070) the last time I checked which was two months ago. Now in that build I am getting a 1070 and after some thinking I said what if I buy a 1080 afterwards ( like on my next bday or something) than I wouldn't be able to sli both 1070 and 1080, but if I buy the 1080 now I could get another one a year later and then sli them. so here where I live the gtx 1070 is $550 and the gtx 1080 is $871.22  so which one should I get? and also another small questions how often will I need to upgrade/get a new gpu if I want to run the newest games on atleast 1080p ultra or VH on 50-60 fps?

For 1080p a single 1070 is overkill at the moment and just a single one alone should last you a couple years easily, two of them in SLI will last you a very long time. Go for the 1070 now and get another 1070 later, don't bother with the 1080 unless you plan to go with 4K gaming or 120/144Hz 1440p.

If you're only playing at 1080p, the GTX 1070 is more than powerful enough. Even the older cards can do the job just fine (I get around 60 FPS at high to ultra settings on my GTX 980). You really don't need a GTX 1080 unless you want to:

  • Play at 4K resolution
  • Play on multiple displays
  • Play at frame rates higher than 60 FPS

Hope that helps.

My setup:

Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor

Asus X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

2x Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card

Cooler Master N400 ATX Mid Tower Case

what exactly is VH?

for 1080p 60fps ultra you only really need the 1060 with an overclock. but the 1070 is a very good card for the price, and can handle even 1440p or DSR quite nicely.

For 1080p a single 1070 would be enough for quite a long time in PC tech terms. Frankly, I can even argue it's quite overkill for 1080p 60 fps, have you considered investing in a better monitor?

Gtx 1060 = 1080p60

Gtx 1070 = 1440p60 or 1080p144

Gtx 1080 = 1440p144

Get a better monitor before considering a 1070 or 1080
